holly cow. how long did that take you to open?? my GPU is a 3080 TI and I've heard that does 95% of the work opening these files, I waited for over 10 minutes and nothing happened. I think something must have gone wrong when he compressed it into a .rar file cause I can see what remains of the mouse looks good but yeah that's not usable at all.

I recently hired someone to design a mouse I plan on manufacturing and the .step file won't open. The max file size upload is 71MB so I've uploaded to an online file sharing service here incase anyone wants to play around with it to try and open it. https://easyupload.io/pgykco

Hopefully the design is a solid brep model like you'd create in Fusion and your designer can supply that. Maybe the designer doesn't want to supply that model until you pay, they could just supply you an STL mesh file for now so you can print it, hopefully it would look more like the original rather that what you've ended up with in the STP file.

Have you seen any pictures of the model?

@morteg109NYL8 wrote:

... my GPU is a 3080 TI and I've heard that does 95% of the work opening these files, ...

That is complete nonsense!

Outside of 3D viewport display, the GPU does almost nothing.

Edit: I opened the 3D model in another CAD application and it looks similarly mangled to what @g-andresen is showing in his screencast. Usually, a .stl file doesn't look that bad when converted into a BRep, or surface model in this case.

Of course, I have no idea what terms and conditions you have negotiated. However, if I were to outsource modeling, I would perhaps accept a .STEP model (not converted from a mesh!!!) but I definitely would also request the original CAD format, including the design history of the feature tree.

As this is the Autodesk Fusion forum, I would request a model with a browser with all sketches, construction geometry, etc., and also a timeline with all features used to create the geometry.

I do occasional freelance work for small companies and I would never send them a .STEP model of a converted mesh model unless they specifically request that. I would also definitely check the output o such a conversion with more than one application.

When sending a model, I would clearly communicate what is contained in the file and why!

so he did send me a non-corrupted version of the file. it is still ridiculously large at 246MB but I'm not sure what a conversion of a STL mesh is vs just a normal constructed step file. The new one looks like this. I'd imagine this is a converted mesh but I'm not sure. I'm good at 3d printing, not 3d design.

I think your designer is converting a model into a mesh then converting the mesh back into a brep model. This is a strange way to share the model, I could understand if the designer only sent you STL files until you pay then send you a surface model in STEP format.

What software is the designer using? Hopefully it is a NURBS modeler and not a mesh only modeler.

Edit. For 3d printing get the designer to just supply a STL file as it will be a lot smaller and ask if at some point is he going to supply a NURBS model.
