I've been dabbling with Fusion since November 2019 and have never been able to import components, whether I created them or not, into assemblies I create. I asked this question on a different forum, but unfortunately, the suggestions the forum users provided didn't work. I'm hoping someone in support can help me solve this problem.

I've checked permissions (I'm the administrator), made sure any components I create are in the same project I'm working on, tried importing components from McMaster, etc. Nothing works.

I've finally learned enough to start my first real project and am finding it extremely cumbersome to have to design every nut, bolt, screw and other components inside a single assembly.

I made a screencast showing the problem. Here's what it shows:

1. Create a brand new project called "test import"
2. Save the default file to the project as "test assembly" and close it.
3. Create a box in a new file, convert it to a component, save it as "test component" and close it.
4. Reopen "test assembly" and try 3 times to drag "test component" into it. No luck

5. Try to import using "Insert into current design". No luck.

Only thing I can think of is that the Trial version has component import disabled. Anyone have any ideas?

The screencast had lots of long pauses, so I clipped them out. Component is in the cloud now. Still no luck. I can click on it in the browser and get a blue highlight border, but it wont drag. Nothing I've created since November ever has.

Nope. Doesn't happen on my machine. I tried importing components from "Design", "CAM", "Electronics" and "Generative Design" files, no luck. Nothing I create inserts or drags.

Interestingly, I was just able to insert a "3D-SAT" file from McMaster Carr, though.

OK, another data point. I just did a full uninstall/reinstall in the hopes that would fix it, but no luck. Still can't drag or "Insert into current design" for anything I create, or from any of the example projects.

Another data point. Since I was able to perform an insert from McMaster, I tried using the "Insert derive" from the "Insert" menu and that worked. Its a workaround, of sorts, but to me, the fact that neither dragging from the data browser, or using the "Insert into current design" commands work qualifies as a fairly serious bug.

dragging from the data panel does not work on all platforms. I'm not sure why. I know it doesn't work on my Mac, but this is a known limitation. Insert Into Active Design, though, should always work, and I just tested it on a similar design, and it works fine, so I don't think there is a general bug here. So, don't even try drag/drop as a way to insert.

Also, this is not at all limited by license type (though it is limited by hub type - you cannot insert from one project to another in a personal hub, but that is not what you are trying to do anyway). I assume you've tried just restarting Fusion. Other than that, I'm at a loss, and unless we can reproduce the problem, we cannot fix it...

I am on a 2017 MacBook pro 13 inch, so I won't try dragging anymore, but the "Insert into current design" doesn't work either. I'm now running Catalina, but up until a few days ago, I was running Mojave and "Insert into current design" doesn't work in either.

I don't know if you saw above, I not only restarted, but did a complete uninstall/reinstall and that didn't fix it. The only thing that works is using "Insert>Insert Derive" from the toolbar. I can get by with that, for now, but maybe try an uninstall/reinstall on a test MacBook Pro 13 inch and see if the problem surfaces.

Thanks for the feedback.

I used to program Macs and had drag and drop in several of my apps. It seems like maybe the NSDraggingSource flag isn't being set correctly by Fusion.

What happens is that the component highlights in the list, but it never goes beyond that. It doesn't even seem to initiate the drag. Here's the link to the NSDraggingSource flags documentation https://tinyurl.com/y9n9vx8g.

I don't know if you're using Objective C or Swift (or C++), but if I had to guess, I would think Fusion might be sending "NSDragOperationNone" or "NSDragOperationAll". Note from the documentation, "NSDragOperationAll" has been deprecated.

Just a wild guess...

.

Solved it on the Mac - the Mac mouse/track pad etc events do not register with Fusion 360. Buy a cheap "windows" mouse with left and right button, scroll wheel and plug in to UBS port and all is suddenly fine.

Clearly Fusion 360 does not listen properly to the MAC mouse/trackpad events etc - you should be able to todo ctrl+click to get the same menu up as a right mouse click......

Amazing! This fatal bug is still present in Fusion 360 in January 2022!

I plugged an old Apple Mouse into USB, and though it was extremely unreliable, eventually after many tries it did do the Insert into Current Design operation!!!

I have spent many hours searching for the cause of this problem, which makes it impossible to assemble components into a new design, an absolute killer failing. No error messages, just fails to do anything.

I'm using a 15" 2017 MacBook Pro with a large display attached mirroring the built in one. I do also have a 3Dconnexion "mouse" for manipulating designs in 3D. I'm running latest MacOS 12.0.1 Monterey.

Everything I've experienced is consistent with the theory that Fusion isn't handling the trackpad/mouse properly, so clicks just get ignored!

So now I'm off to find a Windows mouse.

Unbelievable sink of effort this has been!

I think you are using trackpad settings that do not provide the expected experience. A video made with Screencast would show the exact clicks you are making. Here is a video of me inserting designs in Fusion, using a trackpad. This is the experience you should be getting. So something is off in your trackpad settings is my best guess, a screencast would help sort that out. Also, can you put up an image of your trackpad settings, I'm happy to test whatever you have as settings to see if it's a problem.
