I have an assembly containing multiple components, which are all grounded; they are immovable in this assembly:

When I place this assembly in a new part / assembly, and maintain the link (ie the chain icon remains) all of the grounding of the subcomponents disappears and the subcomponents are now free to move:

This is not expected; I now have an externally linked assembly that can now be in a different configuration even though it is linked. I would expect all linked assemblies/parts to maintain the same relations as the original source.

Am I misunderstanding something?

Create a Rigid Group in the original assembly, instead of Grounding each component. Even if you Break the Link after placement, they will remain together as a group. Of course the group will move in the new assembly but you only need to ground "one" component in the Rigid Group.

Thanks for the info, I agree your solution will work.

But why doesn't the method I am using work? Why doesn't the grounding action from the linked assembly carry over? That is the more important question to answer; perhaps this is a bug?

I do not think so. Grounding of a component is for that specific assembly it a part of only, A linked component / assembly do not carry the grounding information with it. I personally am glad it does not. I have a lot of assemblies that have grounded components that I use in other assemblies in different positions.
