I want to like and use Fusion 360. I really truly do. But every time I think I'm getting the hang of the pivot from Solidworks I run into something else so spectacularly infuriating it's probably not worth the effort.

Case in point. Today I'm modeling a dock interface for a rugged tablet. It's basically the shape of a slot with about 40 features enclosed, most are conductor points, but a few pin holes too.

Now I want to extrude a simple slot shape the size of the perimeter.

Created a new component

created a new sketch

drew a simple slot feature, with point references to the master feature.

saved the sketch

hid all the other components and bodies.

selected extrude

selected the simple sketch profile... and the three dozen other profiles on another component, on another plane, are all there too. The one thing I did not want to deal with.

Seriously, what the fork? If I spend the time to design a sketch, give me a way to use it without a thousand clicks and missing tiny bits here and there.

Help files say drag out a box. Drag boxes are stupid in this context, and frequently totally wrong. And why add the mathematical complexity to the model? So it will be more likely to fail?

Doesn't matter. I'm beyond the point of caring. This was the last straw. I've wasted an embarrassing number of hours on this simple assembly that needed to be done quickly and is now about to become the bottleneck on the entire program. Going back to SW on this one.

It looks like you created the new sketch at step 2 by selecting the face with the 40 features. There is a default preference setting that is "ON" that auto projects all those feature edges into your new sketch.

Either turn that setting off, or sketch on a workplane that sits in the same place.

As @Phil.E has already mentioned I think you've fallen victim to some default preferences which are there to help users new to CAD create results quicker, but very frequently drive experience CAD users absolutely insane!

Here are my preference settings. The two circled in red are on by default but I've turned them off. I want full control over stuff In project/reference in my sketches.

The one in orange I've also turned off. That auto look-at feature often results in me losing my orientation in a more complex design. If needed, there is a look-at button in the sketch palette once you are editing a sketch.
