Additive - Generating g-code completely crashes Fusion 360 with specific model

I originally posted this in the Manufacture board, but realize I should have put it here.

I have one model that I've created that Fusion 360 just doesn't seem to like. The modeling went fine, but this particular solid body doesn't want to generate g-code in the Additive Manufacturing workspace.

I can select a 3D printer, print settings, etc. But, when I hit the "Generate" command, F360 just crashes completely out to my desktop. No errors or report windows, just disappears. There's nothing still running in the background, either.

I've tried other models, and those generate g-code. I even made a cube from scratch and that works fine. Other things I've tried without success: different machine, different print settings, Save Copy As on the body to a new file and try there, export to STEP and re-import, export to STL and re-import, reinstalling Fusion 360, rolling back the Windows 10 build 2004 feature update, logging into a different computer that has Fusion 360 (which also crashes to the desktop).

I have no idea what's unique about this model that Fusion just can't handle it. Any other ideas to try? Anything, in particular, I should look for or investigate on the model itself? (e.g. bad faces, running some kind of solid body analysis, etc.)

The crash is still under investigation. It would help to have another example model. Can you please post the model here, or send me a link?

That appears to be another case for the same issue, but a little early to be sure. I definitely saw the crash as you describe. Thanks for the model and for your patience while we get this sorted out.

Thanks for looking into it. At least it's a repeatable issue.

Fortunately, it's just a model for personal use, and I was able to slice and print via Cura. Hopefully the dev team can figure that issue out.

It's not the first time toolpath generation crashes for me.

Generation worked until I decided to change a component in the Setup1 to a different one (mirrored part). I also tried creating a second Setup with this component, but it also crashed and I lost that change (without recovery).

I fixed the crashing by deleting the setup and creating a new one.

(I experienced crashes and weird part rotations with multiple components before. It was unusable even when it was not crashing.)

@dzid_ The last crash reports from you are from May of this year, and are related to an entirely different (and now fixed) crash. Prior to that there are two reports from a couple years ago.

I downloaded your design and successfully generated the setup, so I'm not sure what's going on with that file. But thanks for sharing.

If you are seeing a crash in Fusion, please send in the report each time.

Not sure if you're already aware, @Phil.E , but I haven't seen any crash/error report windows pop up when this model crashes. I know you were addressing that to @dzid_ , but wanted to make sure that was clear. It's just a pure crash to the desktop with no warnings or errors.

Yes it's crystal clear. I repeated the crash and logged the case. 🙂

I was responding to this specific statement:

When customers tell me they are crashing often, I look at their entire crash history and if there are hardly any I remind them to send in CER reports. That's all.

Right, I am not sure if previous crashes with two setups were generating any crash report window though.

The latest crash didn't and model didn't get autosaved either. 😕

Just FYI.

I will see if I can reproduce the problem from my linked model on another machine...

@Phil.E, I have another model that's crashing when generating g-code. It started as a model from Thingiverse. The mesh body had tons of triangles, so I started cleaning them up considerably.

Link to the model is below. The Additive setup in question is for the Rad Fan Mount M3 Inserts.

Re-importing the STL, and even converting it to B-Rep, is fine. But there's something about this version of the model that Fusion 360 doesn't like. I managed to do it again, though. I can't get it to happen reliably, but I started deleting triangles on flat faces of the B-Rep model to get Fusion to merge them back into single, flat surfaces again. I was testing the g-code generation after each set of small changes, and this is the point where it happened again.

If you look closely, you'll see underneath the angled overhangs that one side is cleaned up and the other is not. That's the point where it happened again. The STL mesh is still in the CAD model, as well. But, trying to recreate that same situation didn't work. So... hopefully this at least helps somewhat.

Hi again. This week Fusion 360 had a major update to build 2.0.8749. This crash should be fixed in this latest update. Please update Fusion and let me know if you still find the same crash.

Verifying build number:

Help > About
Look for a number like "2.0.8XXX" in the about box.
Current build is 2.0.8749

Updating Fusion 360:

Start or restart Fusion
Look at the Job status icon (the small clock in the top bar)
If an update is downloading a small 1 appears on the clock.
Click to see progress and restart message when it's done.

I've tried 3 different models that had crashed on me when generating g-code. They all seem to work just fine now. Looks like the crashing issue is resolved.
