I don't think that is the same. I have both ends of the arc anchored at the pins produced in the previous exercise but cannot cause the arc itself to be constrained to the edge of the cup using the tangent constraint. Here is the link to what I am working on. http://help.autodesk.com/view/fusion360/ENU/?guid=GUID-45636CFB-76FE-419F-9AAC-ECA2AF57A2F7 and here is a screen shot of where I am and the error message.

I am working my way through the Tutorials and am on Activity 3 Sketching to Create Pockets. So far I my drawing looks like the example so I assume all has gone well. My problem comes in trying to apply the tangent constraint to the 3 point arc. I seem to be able to create the arc properly and when completed it is blue so not constrained I think. I select the tangent constraint, click on the arc and then the corner formed by the base and wall and get an error that reads, Failed to Solve. Please try revisiting dimensions or constraints. As far as I know I have not placed a dimension or other constraint on the arc.

I have tried various different approaches and even started the whole drawing from scratch more than once and cannot find what I am doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Guenther,

Thank you for your help. I still cannot get this to work. It could be that I have done something wrong in the creation of the 3D object prior to the steps for adding the pockets. When I look at my drawing I do not see the dots on the circumference of the small circles like your example shows and if I try to use the circumference then when I make the arc tangent to the larger circle the ends of the arc move off of where I originally set them.

I will delete my drawing and start over again and see if I can find out where I went wrong. I thought I followed the tutorial step by step but I must have missed something.

Neal Nicholson

Hi Neal,

In your example the center points of the circles are the orientation for the 3 point arc.

The vertex of the arc is fixed by the tangential condition to the arc.

günther

Guenther,

I believe I understand how it is supposed to work. I think that is part of my frustration because it seems so straight forward but I cannot get it to work.

I select the center of one circle and then the center of the second and then a point in between the two. At that point the tutorial tells me to hit esc to end the arc which I do. Now the arc line is in blue. Next step is to activate the tangent constraint and select the arc line and then (I think) the corner formed between the base and the vertical wall. When I did that at first I got the constraint error message I first wrote about. I started the whole tutorial over again and noticed I had 3D sketch checked so I unchecked that and shut down Fusion 360 and opened it again. After working my way back to the point of drawing the arc what is happening now is that the arc will attach to the circumference but the end points of the arc move off of the centers of the circles.

Neal Nicholson

Hi Neal,
but the tutorial has some traps.
So you have to take care that the reference to the center (concentricity) and the arcs is kept. In the Screencast I tried to show the process as I would do it in a construction. So I did not duplicate the segment in the sketch but extruded a profile and then created a circular pattern from this extrusion with the option "Feature".

günther
