troulble turning most of a sphere

i can not seem to find a solution on how to turn this simple part 😞

i am trying a round insert using center of insert compensation. it does not turn a accurate sphere nor spherical sphere. and the 1 inch neck is about 1.24 inch diameter instead of 1 inch.

HELP PLEASE

The toolpath is calculated to the insert centre you have set in the tool library. How have you set the tool in your lathe? I set my tools up using Tip for compensation type.

OK didn't notice roughing will not let you use Tip as the compensation type. @seth.madore is that by design? Also noticed a bug, if you edit the tool to Tip then change back to insert center the op still fails and there doesn't seem to be a way to fix the op after that.

@johnptc314159 you could turn on the old roughing strategy in preferences and use that instead. Or you'll need to set the tool up on the machine so the center of the tip is zero I guess.

This is the old roughing strategy using tip compensation.

Setting is here in preferences.

there must better a better way....not married to this tool 😞

Only time I've made some ball joints I used a tool like below and set up as tool tangent. I added fillet rads on the part to get around any problems with releaf on the trailing side of the tip.

Just for the record; we do have a fix in place for the previously mentioned "Tip Error". Wo hope to release it in a future Hotfix..

yes. using a round insert and toolholder gave just parts. delete toolholder leave round insert and all worked, parts were very close ( haas st15 lathe)

I only glanced at all the posts and went straight for file so I can see what is going on in real time.

Here is what I learned, selecting round insert and trying to define holder in old tool library has a problem.

I cannot select custom holder and that prevents tool from being able to undercut back side.

The solution is to use round insert without the holder.

Noticed I also used 35 degree tool leading up to that conclusion.

In 99 % of my turning work I use tip tangent as that is in sink with how tools are touched off in machine.

You can also use center of round insert but after touching off tip of insert in machine you need to shift X and Z values to be in sink with programmed point.
