the practice I have always used was to leave .01" or whatever stock under the passes tab, duplicate the operation, and take the stock to leave and turn ramping off.

add an op stop for tweaking tool wear. this way you can just run the final pass instead of cutting air, turning dry feed on or turning the federate all the way up while it cuts a bunch of air.

or finish with a separate tool, or sperate your rough and finish with other tools. orrr

2D/3D Contour Finishing Pass?

Brand new to Fusion so forgive the very basic question but I've searched for the same issue and can't find a solution that works.

I'm trying to machine a soft jaw for a project and can't figure out why CAM won't "finish" the part either in 2D or 3D (I'm not sure which is best).

I've tried various 2D and 3D selections and settings but can't isolate the issue. I've tried adjusting the "stock to leave" and just leaving either radial or axial but I can't get Fusion to take the 0.02 from the entire area like the adaptive did. I'm sure it's something simple..

I think it's a selection issue but I can't troubleshoot it and fee like I've tried everything but obviously not!

Thanks in advance!

Couple of things;

1) Tool Orientation is for 4/5 axis machines. If you are using a 3-axis mill, we want to define our Setup to correctly orient our WCS. Let's dispense with the Tool Orientation.

2) Because of 1 (above), it's showing your selected line as being well off the part. Fix your WCS and turn off Tool Orientation.

Anyways...

You've got the roughing part established properly, that's great. Now, we can right click on the toolpath and select "Create Derived Operation":

Select 2D Contour, turn on "Stock Contours" on the Geometry Tab (don't select anything) and then turn on Roughing Passes on the Passes tab. Set your number of stepovers to 3.

That will give us this for a toolpath:

 I've attached the file

Thanks Seth! Not even sure why I had Tool Orientation selected but that makes sense. So you don't need to do anything with Rest Machining it looks like; I was under the impression that I'd need to have that selected but it looks like Stock Contours is basically doing the same logic.

Would you say this is a good blueprint for most simple operations like this? My head is only spinning a little lol.

Thanks again!!

Yes, for any 2.5D part, this is a perfect blueprint to be using. 3D Adaptive also makes for a good roughing strategy, but it can be a bit picky on settings

You have Stock Contours turned on, but that's only one piece of the puzzle. You also need to have "Roughing Passes" turned on (it's on the Passes tab). Turn it on, set your stepover and toss in a random value like 5. It will trim off the excess and you will get this:
