Hi all.

Please see the simulation of the attached part. I have two facing operations. In the 2nd patterned facing operation, when you simulate the process the tool collides with stock, as it tries to cut 2 passes deep before finishing the 2nd pass. Why doesn't the facing operation finish cutting to specified depth before plunging to next pass and taking off what should be part of the third pass?

Didn't notice this before running the program, busted an endmill in the process. 😤

Since I saw your file last time, you added holder to toll but did not set proper clearance from tooltip.

Tool is going to depth you gave it in operation but holder crashes into stock .

I suspect that it was vibration at point of holder impact with stock that caused tool to break while under load of a partial cut it took on the way down.

You are using Face strategy to remove bolk of round stock but this strategy is not model aware, prone to undesirable moves.

You should turn part of the stock and make sketches for use as stock outline to contain tool, maybe using 2D pocket would be better option.

@daniel_lyall Yes that fixed it! Such a simple thing I missed. Thanks for the tip.

@Anonymous Reason it broke is because it started from the wrong side and wanted to go too deep. Ticking that box suggested by the other gentlemen helped. And yea I didn't set up the tool holder properly, should start doing that😁

You mention using sketches to outline the stock and then using a 2d pocket to finish. Not quite sure how this is done, can you show me please? In a screencast or attached file?

Thank you sir.

This can be a problem ,.... along with tool not sticking out enough from holder 😁🙄

Here is sketch showing tool controlled within desired area and just enough to clear back edge.

You have more control in pocket strategy along with using compensation if required.

If you used contour with passes in V slot you could also control that tool path better, adoptive clearing is for roughing only.

Just noticed, if I turn spun profine on in setup, some nonsense error comes up related to spindle speed, anyway, since you are not doing any turning, there is no need to turn it on.

Edit:

Just to show using sketch to drive 2D pocket, I also added finish pass.

Aassuming cutting soft material so depth of cut starting in the middle may be OK, otherwise cut down on depth.

Exactly the solution I was looking for, thanks for reaching out. Struggling with making toolpaths on my parts that work like I want them to, especially when it comes to milling and all the different options. I don't think I realize how much can be done if I incorporate a sketch into my part and use it for references. I will learn eventually I guess.

Thanks again for your great responses when I post to the forums, keep up the good work. 😊
