Hey All,

I am trying to figure out how to mill the chamfers around the outer edge of this part. They are interrupted and proving to be more than I can figure out on my own. I have tried several different operations and none are giving me the correct result.

In addition there is a moulding across the tail of the part which is giving me fits too.

I attached the f3d file for the part as well. Thanks for any ideas / help!

Attached are two pics of the features:

On the Chamfers, well, it depends....

Are you looking for quickest? I'd use the 2D Chamfer toolpath, but that will require a concession on your part. In this zone here:

You have it modeled as a specific angle, but 2D Chamfer would give us a radius on each side. Is that acceptable, or are you set on having geometry close to what is modeled?

For that shallow groove, I'd likely just make a patch surface, extend the length a bit and then use Parallel

Okay, so all that above was typed before I inspected the model, shame on me. The chamfer actually isn't a 45 degree, so a conventional chamfer mill isn't going to work here. I retract my prior comments about using 2D Chamfer and instead suggest the use of Scallop or 3D Contour. This is going to be made easier if you make some Patch surfaces and extend some edges so you can get the tool off the part (in the Z+/- direction)

Seth,

Okay I'm looking up Patch Surfaces now. That is something I don't know about

In answer to your other question, a radius on the area you highlighted is okay. Also I plan on using a 45* cutter even though the model isn't truly 45 deg. As long as I can keep the cut / chamfer lined up at the bottom of the edge in the model I think I'd be okay.

So, 2D Chamfer is NOT going to work, since it actually does check against the model itself. However, 2D Contour does NOT, so we can force it to do the task at hand. That said, a 45 deg tool will give us this for a result, are you okay with that much overcutting?

The Z height lines up perfect with the model, fwiw

Lol, how did you do that so fast! But I am glad you did b/c that would end up being way to much overcut on the top of the part.

I was just playing around with scallop as you mentioned with a ball end mill, I've got a lot to learn there too. If I'm trying to keep the angle in the model do you think that would be best as opposed to the 3d contour?

Thanks again!!

Seth,

So I did a bit of poking and learning. I don't even know if this is right or close to right, but I drew a sketch to contain the tool path and added patches to the screw holes and did a 3d contour around the front of the lockplate. It is Tool 11 in setup 4 under in the Manufacture module.

Is this even remotely right approach wise? I know the tool settings etc. are crazy. I'm just trying to figure out a process.

Even this I don't know how I'd apply it to the tail of the plate. But at least I'm learning something!
