Hi @r.moss

Thanks for reaching out.

1. There are two viewing options for items in the Component sources dialog - Tree view and Table view. You may use icon in the top left to switch between the views and when dialog is closed and reopened it will persist the last state selected. Regarding persisting the expand/collapse state within the tree dialog - we have logged this as a 'Quality of Life' enhancement request (TRUNFSN-2191) and will try to address it in a future sprint.

2. There are 4 places where you may flag components as non-nestable.

i. Nest Preparation dialog - set the component to Ignore. Setting it here affects all Nests.

ii. Component Sources dialog - select the component in the table and set 'Override Nest Qty' = 0. Setting it here affects all Nests.

iii. Create Nest Study/Edit Nest Study dialog - deselect the checkbox in the leftmost column. Setting it here only affects this Nest Study.

iv. Edit Nest dialog - deselect the checkbox in the leftmost column. Setting it here only affects this Nest.

3. There are a few ways to set multi-quantity overrides:

i. Component Sources dialog - You can Shift+Click or Ctrl+Click to multi-select the components in the table that you wish to apply a common qty and then apply the Override Nest Qty from the right hand side. This will apply the new qty to all selected items. Thus, saving you time and additional clicks.

ii. Create Nest Study dialog - You can also set Job Quantity to 'Multi-value' and then apply the desired qty multiplier for each assembly in the list. This will essentially give you the desired result.

4. File not generating editable items in the Component Sources dialog - In the source design check under Design > Nest Preparation dialog, to make sure the Component is not set to 'Ingore'

Component Sources: some components have no details / how to set multiple instances?

I am using the Nesting and Fabrication extension to create laser-cutting patterns. I have created a manufacturing model and imported 11 files into it.

I have two problems.

(1) The component sources dialogue box is very unwieldy and unfriendly when one has hundreds of components. It does not help that it does not remember the state of the tree structure, so every time I close and re-open Component Sources the entire tree structure expands fully. So far it is up to 29 scrolling pages like this:

So if I look at the nesting output and find a component that shouldn't have been nested, e.g. a piece of tube, I have to read down through all 29 pages looking for "Tube stub" or whatever I called it. Is there any way of selecting a component in the nesting tree and flagging it as unwanted, so that it updates the Component Sources list? (I can edit the Nest Study instead, but scrolling through all 210 items in that list isn't much easier).

Once I've reduced it to readable form by shrinking all the tree branches:

it would be nice if it remembered this for next time I open the dialogue.

Is there a way of getting multiple copies of a whole assembly? I want 2 copies of "Pelton housing" but I don't want to click on every item in that assembly (maybe 15 items) and double the number shown for each, nor do I want to have to import the assembly twice. When I try to set multiples of the assembly, the "Overwrite nest quantity" field is greyed-out:

I guess there must be a way of doing this.

(2) My second problem is that one assembly file does not generate editable items in the component sources dialog - I'm not sure what's wrong with it.

"Window side panel", "glass window" etc should appear as nesting components but they have no nest material, thickness etc. Have I done something wrong? A few of the items in this file have all the details but most don't and I cannot see why.

The file link is here: https://a360.co/3sh6n5j

Thanks

Roger

I have done a screencast for this problem. I have a model that seems fine but when I load it into Component Sources in the manufacturing workspace, almost all the components are greyed out. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

The files are here: https://a360.co/34z1cp4 (model), https://a360.co/3uuFKfH (manufacturing model).

Screencast is heere: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/community/screencast/39d9962c-c1a4-410e-9ee2-21ce1ffafc54

46 views but no responses! Is this a genuine problem or am I doing something wrong?

I really don't want to have to regenerate the design model in the hope that a new version will magically work better with the Nesting extension than the old one.

Thank you very much, that's a really useful summary. I couldn't find that level of explanation in the help system; maybe I was looking in the wrong place. It is working now - for some reason those components had got set to ignore in the Nest Preparation.

When nesting multiple copies of an assembly, is there some way of crowding them onto as few cutting sheets as possible rather than getting one nest per copy?

Best wishes

Roger

When nesting multiple copies of an assembly, is there some way of crowding them onto as few cutting sheets as possible rather than getting one nest per copy?

The Nest Study will not separate the multiple copies onto individual nests. It will automatically nest all parts (like materials + thickness) together to get a tighter fit and minimize waste.

Are you seeing different results? Please elaborate.
