hey everyone ...

so unfortunately my machine has a really weak spindle and also i'm cutting materials that tend to tear out and burr a lot. So ideally when chamfering a hole for a screwhead i would love to be able to cut in several passes. I haven't figured out how to approach this. Granted that for this small holes i could just use a drill operation using a chamfer mill but i also want to chamfer edges and other features so knowing how to do this would come in handy 😊

Could someone maybe give me some pointers, i tried searching the forum and youtube but couldn't really find anything usefull.

Here's a demo file with the manufâcturing space all set up:

This is one of those things that I wish Fusion offered, multiple depth passes on chamfer. Sure, we can duplicate the path and have the previous pass leave a small amount for the last pass to finish it, but this is silly. When chamfering harder materials, like SS and titanium, having the ability to have multiple depth passes would be greatly appreciated to lessen the wear on our cutters. And you could also say, well, if you want to have multiple depth passes, then use contour and if you are using a chamfer mill or spot drill, then you get the option to have multiple depths, even a radial finish pass, well then, how come 2d chamfer doesn't have these options. The algorithms must exist as they are present in contour, so just add them to 2d chamfer, and if you can't add these options, then just get rid of 2d chamfer all together, IMO.

LeoC

hey sorry for the late reply ... the forum software wouldn't let me post yesterday for some reason.

@weber_dominicthx for this, i kinda knew i could do this by duplicating toolpaths .. i thought there was a way to set up multiple passes in one operation because as @leo.castellon said it's a bit silly not to have this option esepcially if you are working with harder materials and/or like me have a weak spindle who just can't handle a one pass.

We do have a task opened to investigate the feasibility of adding multiple depths to chamfer, and you're not alone in thinking this should be an option (it really should be). CAM-34654 is the task, and I've added this thread to the ticket.

None of these "solutions" work with an actual chamfer tool. Either the toolpath fails to generate altogether (95% of the time) or the chamfer is the wrong size(+.100 too big) when machined, the toolpath was sketchy but I figured I'd give it a shot. I've used the ramp function to rough out the material with a flat endmill, but fusion refuses to generate a toolpath for a chamfer tool. I watched the video you linked a few days ago and that works great for that use case, but the straight line chamfers around the perimeter of my part are driving me insane. I have tried every single suggestion google has to offer over the last two weeks and nothing works. A simple option in the chamfer tool might fix this, but I have zero faith in autodesk actually fixing a problem or adding a useful feature.

Alos, I updated the diameter of the tool I was using to rough out the chamfer and the toolpath broke. WTF?

Is your tool defined with a tip size?

.1 off means something is wrong in CAM or physical setup.

If youre just doing a profile chamfer, you can also just offset with Stock To Leave if you know the angle ie: a 90* chamfer is offset 1:1 so +.1 on radial, -.1 on axial

One of the most important things is to define your tools correctly or you will never get the correct result and that's not the fault of Fusion (or any software for that matter)

You can rough the chamfer with a square endmill and finish with 3D contour, parallel, or even flow and get pretty good results.

It half worked. I'm not accepting this as a solution to a problem created by the developer that should have been fixed years ago. It's a workaround, at best. One that shouldn't be necessary. Calling this a solution only incentivizes Autodesk to do nothing about the actual problem.

No, calling this a solution merely increases its ranking for when someone in the future looks up the same issue. Dont worry, Im sending Autodesk plenty of things to improve on every month.

Seth, does anyone report anywhere nearly as much as I do? LOL
