Three hours into trying to create a 2D pocket and reading numerous posts where others have the same problem, I'm still stuck.

I simply want to pocket the POCKET. However, selecting the geometry "chain" and stock contours "chain" in every imagineable way has only restulted in cutting everything except the pocket. Without sending a copy of my part, can anyone explain the work flow involved in cutting the actual pocket? This should not require seeing my actual file. A pocket is a pocket is a pocket in most CAM systems.

To review, I have selected the pocket, which becomes highlighted in blue. Then I select the bottom edges of the pocket using the mysterious "contours" button. What did I miss?

Would you PLEASE post screenshots of your parameters! This is the third time I have asked, because without them it is quite difficult to pinpoint exactly what is going wrong. If it's an open pocket, it will not work, because that's NOT a pocket in HSM/Fusion, and you'd be better served using something like Horizontal in the 3D menu.

Or mock up a similar part and upload it here. You might also want to try camforum.autodesk.com and see what folks come up with there. Quite a few people who do not visit this forum, including me up until a few days ago.

I'm happy to post whatever you think you need, but I don't see any way to post a screen shot of which geometries I have selected as they don't highlight after the calculations are complete. I know for a fact that pocketing DOES work on open pockets as I have done it on a different section of the part. Tell me how to post what you need and I'm happy to do so.

I finally got it to highlight the selections. For some reason, it required opening and closing the strategy several times before showing up with highlights.

The highlighted selections will not produce the correct pocket.

Can you take a shot of your Passes and Linking tabs? What size is the tool and what's the distance between the two walls? If your tool is too large for either a Stock to Leave allowance or is the same size as the distance between walls it will not generate. Leads can also cause issues.

Also try turning off Stock Contours (if you just hit the checkbox it will keep the selections if you want to turn them back on).

The tool is a .020 endmill and the distance is .023 between walls. Fusion doesn't even attempt to machine between the walls. It always assumes geometries outside of what I have selected.

I'm sorry but it doesn't really "assume" anything. Now you might have encountered a bug, but it's going to work off of your geometry selections and toolpath parameters in a nominal situation. Without seeing the part or at least all of your parameters, it's very difficult to figure out exactly which one is causing this issue. I'm really hoping Jeff Walters shows up and offers a little more insight, as he's probably seen more of this issue than I have. For now I'm making "educated speculations" since I can't see anything directly.

Also, can you right-click your operation once generated and click "Show Log" and see what that saysafter generation?

Try these first (it might not work, but have to start somewhere):

Turn off Stock to Leave entirely, since it's set to 0 anyway. This might even be confusing the kernel, although that would be a bit odd.

Turn off Smoothing. It'll be a bigger toolpath, but for now we just want it to calculate a path. 50 millionths is a really small value to have in that box, too, so that may be part of the issue.

If these do nothing, add a Finish Pass, leave the Compensation option on In Computer, and make it .0001"

You might also have to give it an entry position, so pick a point at the beginning of the open pocket, anywhere really, but try the first two options first.

I will add that I have never had much luck with Pocket in open pocket geometry.

If none of this works, you can always try a 2D Contour as well, and selecting the bottom of the pocket as Stock Contours and using Multiple Finish Passes with, say 80% of your tool diameter for a stepover. This is usually my default for finishing floors on open pockets, although I have started playing with Horizontal (in the 3D paths section) more lately.

I appreciate your advice.

1) I turned off stock to leave and smoothing - same problem

2) I gave it an entry position at the beginning of the open pocket - problem persists

3) I did try 3d contour and encountered a lot of other problems that were never resolved, which is why I am trying pocketing. I did get horizontal finishing to get inside the slot, but it leaves material and then cuts outside of the parameters I have set up so the problem is somewhat similar.

I believe the problem is hidden within the software itself, not in a parameter as it is choosing to pocket areas I did not select.

Fusion 180 update...

Yes, I said 180 as I have turned a corner or two thanks to Al and Curt with Autodesk. With their patient assistance through a GoToMeeting session, we discovered the issues plaguing my CAM progress.

It turns out that Fusion was doing really weird things that are not normal or useful because my part was imported from Rhinoceros as surfaces and solids. After converting everything to stitched solids and minimizing bodies, everything worked right away. I can now predictably create slots with the pocket strategy and contours along curves and surfaces.

I have to say that Fusion is truly awesome software once everything is working properly!

I'm running two complex test parts this week, one programmed in Fusion 360 CAM and the other in RhinoCAM, which I have used successfully for many years. I'll update you on the results.

Thank you again to Curt, Al and everyone who chimed in the past two days on all three threads.

Jason
