Looking at the adaptive cut I'm not sure whether you might be better off with 2d contour for that as well, take a look at the attached file.

Hello Forum,

I am new to Fusion and have been working on a set of soft jaws for my vise. I have machined the large semi circular cut and the vise step cut. Now, with the part still in the milling machine, I want to do a finish cut on the stepped surface, but I do not seem to be able to figure out how on Earth you do it. I cannot select it or use the face operation...?

Would appreciate your assistance.

Jgaertner

If I've understood what you're after try this using 2d contour. Take a look at the geometry tab, contour selections and roughing passes, because I've used stock contours you can set a high number of step overs and it only machines the part.

It never touched the larger, horizontal face that needs a finish cut too?

Jgaertner

I think the problem is you left no allowance in the previous op, try enabling Stock to Leave in the roughing op.

OK, I guess I will have to try this on my next project be cause when I run the code now, there is no material to be remove, so the mill does not make any cuts on the face that I want it to finish.

So is it normal to use two operations (adaptive clearing and 2D contour) to get a rough cut and then a finish cut? Or is there another way of doing it?

I just printed out the "Tutorial 5 Advance 3D Machining" but it is not very clear there, either because they go over all the operations.

Jgaertner

Yes generally you'd leave an allowance for finishing, you'll need to decide how much based on experience. It will depend on material, setup and your machine.

If you don't mind the part being slightly under size you could set minus allowances to clean up what you have now, just set the axial stock to -0.01 and see if it cleans up.

Hello Mark,

Yes that is a good idea, and I gave it some thought while this side of soft jaws was still in the Mill vise but I want the two sides to match (one was machined and removed from the vise) in elevation for holding my actual part that I am making.

I will try a piece of scrap aluminum first , on doing a pocket and then a finish pass.

Can you just use the same operation (after remembering to leave some stock, but use the "Machine Rest" operation tab for the finish pass?

Jgaertner

Hello Mark,

Can you just use the same operation (after remembering to leave some stock, but use the "Machine Rest" operation tab for the finish pass?

Jgaertner

Generally you'd finish with some sort of contouring op.

If it 3d you'll need to experiment with these.

One exception would be roughing with a big cutter and a bigger allowance then using a smaller cutter and smaller allowance to semi-finish, you could use adaptive for both and rest for the semi-finishing.
