Do you have a tool long enough to reach the depth required, the 2D contour will do what you need all you need to do is pick the outside edge at the bottom of the bowl, so it looks like the pick below file attached for references as well

Hello All, I have attached a f3d file and have a question regarding this. I know how to do a roughing and smoothing operation to get the inner shape out of my block of wood.. But I do not know how to do a cut this bowl out. I found an operation in 2d with a tabs option but I am still unclear on how to get the machine to cut the outside. The stock is 7.5inx7.5x.974, the z height of the bowl is the same as the stock.

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the response. I tried your suggestion. During the simulation, the bit just comes right down to the bottom line as if there is no stock to remove before reaching that depth, it then runs the path for about 11 seconds and is done. Is there something else I should be doing?

You have quite few options when it comes to the cut dept with 2D contour.

What I do most times is in the passes tab I set it like below

you have few options you can change depending on how ridged the machine is and what finishing equipment you have.

The finishing step down I set it to be the same as the roughing stepdown if the outside is going to be sanded.

if it's not it's a good idea to set the finishing stepdowns to one or two and finishing stepdown to less than the rough step down it will give it a few extra paseses at depth, whats also good for less rigid machines as it's almost a spring pass.

the other thing I do is turn off leads and transitions and set the ramp angle to a point where the cutter will just spiral into the cut, I do this so you can have the cutter going from the top to the bottom in one go and the amount it's taking is as close to constraint as you can get. you can push the machine a bit harder and faster and still get a good job.

You can use the Maximum ramp stepdown to restrict how much it steps down, I have it set at a large number as I know the machine can handle it.

This all depends on how much Hp you have and how ridged and how well you know the machine, if you have a grunt dust extractor that helps as well.

I have your file attached set like the picks
