Hello,

I'm looking on how to get multiple depths to a V carve Engrave CAM and am having a hard time with a V bit. Is this even possible with the engrave CAM path to determine pass depth? Should I be using a different strategy?

As you can see from the next screenshot the tool plunges full depth in and does 1 full engrave. However notice how you can see the model, I don't think that should be the case. . .

Also, here you can see the waste still left in the middle that I'm trying to remove.

I have good news for you! We recently finished implementing multiple depths to the engrave toolpath, but it has not yet been added to the official release. It will likely be added to the UI in the next update. You can read more about it here:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/hsm-beta-testing-english-deutsch/engrave-multiple-depths-feedback/td-p/7434003

However, your picture appears to be an interesting case because the tool is not as wide as the feature. Since engrave does not yet support stepovers, I recommend using a larger tool or roughing out that center material first.

I think I'll just have to use an 1/8" ball nose to get in there and then either hand chisel the sharp points or try a 60 degree V bit trace operation.

I'm surprised they don't have step over or multiple depth passes yet.

I know that is kind of why I bumped the post. My machine can't handle a full depth of cut and it wouldn't look very good without a flat bottom anyway. I was hoping to see some better v carving features by now. The idea of being able to take a photo of the slab, scaling in Fusion, and engraving would make the process one less step. At least if Fusion could export a .dxf of text that v carve pro could understand that would be acceptable. If you export a text sketch to v carve you just get the bounding squares. Not helpful at all.

I mean there are ways to get it done, but keeping my workflow all in Fusion would be nice.

Hi everyone

Well I got to buy a small cnc machine mainly to engrave brass...

i didnt do the math yet with all the feed rates and speed and all that, as i'm a F360 and CNC beginner, but i dont think my engraving bit will handle 1mm depth in one single pass (30 degres bits with 0,1 mm tip diameter...), even if its a prismatic shape supposed to be stronger than usual ones.

I've got what they call a hobbyst cnc (stepcraft 600), and i'm wondering if i didn't bought this machine for nothing...

I really hope this multiple depth setting is on schedule..

in the meantime i would'nt say no to any tip that could help me engraving safely.

And by the way F360 is a h... of a good program !

For multiple depth currently, it's kind of a cludgy work around. You would need to duplicate the toolpaths and apply a different max depth to each one

A couple of ideas. You can rough out a pocket and set a wall taper angle. See attached file, the example is for embossed text but shows how to pocket and 2d contour using wall taper. You could also set up a taper mill that matches the chamfer mill used in the engrave op. Unfortunately Fusion will not let you use a taper mill for engrave or pocket correctly with a chamfer mill even if they are set up identical!

Multiple Depths hasn't been forgotten. With any luck, we should see it in SOME upcoming update. That's not a statement of "Next Update" or anything like that. Work is being done on it, so it hasn't been ignored 🙂

Good news!!! We now have Multiple Depth Engraving, as of update 2.0.6613

That said, I did a quick spot check and I think "8", partial "9", "O" and "o" may still have issues with that...

There is a ticket open for this, hopefully we can see it wrapped up soon (well, sooner than releasing this feature took😂)
