Hi,

I am trying to clear a simple pocket. The part is a 15" diameter disk with 3 shallow face slots, spaced at 120 degrees, meeting in the middle. When I choose the floor of the pocket, it generates a tool-path for one leg only. These is weird because the three slots join to make on large feature. I need some advice with this it's very puzzling. The stock is set to,"from solid" and the tool is a 1/2 flat end mill.

Screen shots attached.

Thank you

Forrest

Hi @forrest86LD6,

What you are seeing is the pocket not automatically selecting the appropriate chain / pocket when you select the face to machine. If you watch the screencast from this post, it will show you how to modify your chain that you want in order to define the pocket.

If you click an edge, then click it again, you will see some options come up related to your chain selection. Click the segments that make up your machining area, make sure to select the open pocket option, and then click the check mark to accept your chain once you're happy with the results.

Hopefully this helps and gets you on track.

Hi @forrest86LD6,

If you go to knowledge.autodesk.com and search for "Chain" it should give you some fairly good results on how to change your contours. You could also upload your model here (attach to this post as an f3d file) and I could make a screencast with your part on how to select the chains you want.

There is this post that shows very basically how to make an open chain selection, and here is a tutorial that takes you through the same process. And I think @LibertyMachine summed it up nicely in the post I linked to previously on the basics of the chain selection.

So just let me know if you need more help after taking a look at those things.

Thanks,

Hi Noah,

I guess I'm going to really show my ignorance. When I do a save as, it doesn't let me select a file type and since the files is saved to the cloud, I can't figure out how to send it to you.

I did manage to create a tool path. My Son suggested using 2d contour with a bunch of roughing passes. It's strange, though, I though Adaptive clearing should have worked, too. I used the alt key to selevt the contour segments.

FT

Hi @forrest86LD6,

Sorry for not being more clear about how to get the correct file to upload. You actually need to use Export instead of Save As - Go to File -> Export... -> Select the type to be "Archive Files (*.f3d)" -> Check "Save to my computer".

Then when posting here, attach that .f3d file as an attachment.

Glad you were able to get a toolpath, but hopefully we can get it working with adaptive as well. I'm happy to take a look if you attach the file.

Thanks,

I imported the model from SolidWorks and am using a contour to chamfer. Is there a clearance setting to prevent the chamfer tool from whacking into the side wall as shown?

Thanks a lot,

Forrest

Hi @forrest86LD6,

Here is a screencast showing you how to make your selections for the 2D Adaptive operation.

Also, to make sure the tool doesn't hit the part in your chamfering with the 2D Contour operation, you can provide a negative Tangential Extension Distance in the Geometry tab. That will give you control over how close you want the tool to get to the rest of the model and essentially allow you to shorten the toolpath to your liking.

I attached a modified version of your file for you to look at with the Adaptive and the updated 2D contour used for chamfering.
