Milling Text on a base - how to CAM?

Hello everyone,

I've been playing around with Fusion for a couple of months now and also CAD and CAM some parts and milled them on my machine.

Now I'm stuck with a CAM-Question and can't figure out how to do it.

I want to mill big letters sitting on a base. Naturally I created a rectangle and some text above it (just intersecting the rectangle a bit), exploded the text, extruded it all in one and used the 2D Contour operation to get my result.

Now I want the base to be let's say 10mm (the size of my stock) and the letters only 5mm which should recess them a bit. Please see the screenshot.

No matter how I create the toolpath, the setup or the model, in 2D contour I just can't select the "combined" contour (the base plus the letters) as one. With multiple operations i'm running into the problem, that another contour or pocket would cut my base as well.

I tried the model with 2 "new body" options on my 2 extrusions or one set to join (hoping this will merge the letters and the base).

I thought if I try to select the contour on the bottom side the contour would be in one piece - of course coming from the top the base and the letters are separated elements.

If your letters aren't touching the edge of the component, it might be worth creating a sketch with the contour you're trying to select (create a midplane and project the edges)

That idea sounds also great, but I seem to be doing something wrong. I tried the midplane and an offset plane and projected the outlines right onto that plane - but when heading over to CAM and selecting the 2D Contour the Contour still only lets me select single outlines for the letters or the base...

What am I missing?

Instead of selecting the text try to rove over at the base it tends to show the preview of the selection at some point it will preview the entire portion like the ones attached below.

Don't Select multiple contours if you do delete the open contours.

Before sending the screen cast could you please explain how you modeled it?

I still only get single contours when in CAM.

A new approach was to create the sketch (text and base) extrude all together to 5mm, then create a new sketch on top, project the rectangles corner points, create the rectangle and then extruded only that for an additional 5mm.

I thought that way Fusion will find my "combined contour".

I believe my problem lies within the model not in CAM trying to select the right thing.

Funny thing, i actually did everything right but setting the second extrusion to "join" (thought i tried that) - my bad.
