What Are ODB++ Files For?

Hello,

I just spoke to a PCB supplier about a recent project we had quoted.

They mentioned the ODB++ files did not show the hidden vias on my project but the Gerber files did.

What is the ODB++ files for if they do not show the same information as the Gerber files?

It caused confusion and extra work to find out they're not needed.

I was told that the ODB++ files were an old file type that some manufacturer's don't use.

If this is true, why are the ODB++ files created in a CAM job?

I hope you're doing well. Don't tell me the name of the supplier, let's protect the innocent. 🙂

So for background, the grand majority of manufacturing centers on gerbers and supplementary manufacturing info like BOMs and Pick n Place files, etc. This approach is simple, protects IP, and gives the info necessary to get the boards made. This is the industry standard. With that said, it has it's faults, namely that you have to produce a LOT of files.

The ODB++ standard was developed avoid generating disparate files and different file formats and unify everything in one place. If a manufacturer is setup for it, it streamlines the manufacturing process and can save money. It's been refined over the years and is still very relevant, especially in high volume production.

With all that said, if your board manufacturer does not support them or want them then it's best not to send it to them. Any additional info you send that they don't need will create confusion.

You can create a custom CAM job to only produce the data you want to send. There are also quick export buttons to export just the gerbers and supplementary files, or to export ODB++.

This can also help you avoid sending extra data.

"I was told that the ODB++ files were an old file type that some manufacturer's don't use." - this is not true Fusion Electronics exports ODB++ using the latest specification V8.1 Update 3.

The ODB++ generated image data is the same with Gerber the biggest difference between the 2 formats is that ODB++ also exports the full ECAD information including: components, footrpints and netlist.

If you think that there is a real issue with the ODB++ output then if you can send us an example showing this then we will investigate it.
