Not a perfect solution, but you could press/pull one end back the distance required for the split, then extrude a new body from there "to object" and pick the other end of the bolt if you need that piece. If you don't need the body split and just want the tangent edge present, use a split face instead.

Regards,

Simple Split Body Question

So, I have a student who is trying to split a body - he just wants to split the one side of the "U" but the splitting tool extends so that it splits both ends of the U - for the life of me I can't figure out how to just the one side. I have been using an offset construction plane as the cutting tool and obviously it extended through the whole body even though it doesn't look like it would. I have also tried using a sketch drawn on the construction plane as a cutting tool but that also didn't work. I would imagine it is something really simple I'm missing? Thanks in advance!

The idea is to split the body at that point so he could create a component out of each and then join them with a rotational joint. He kinda did it backwards, but I was trying to see if we could do a quick split and then convert them to components.

I did a quick circle just to see if I could split within the extents of that shape. I went back in and dimensioned it but it wants to split along the x-axis.
