That feature can have issues with curved surfaces if the sketch profile does not fully intersect the face you select but generally can be used with any planar surface regardless of orientation in space. Definitely, a tool worth sticking in your back pocket for situations such as this where putting in an arbitrary extrude distance will leave your model less parametrically robust and not as capable to deal with changes to the geometry.

I'm glad this solved your issue.

Hi Folks

This is a part derived from a supplier DXF that I was just modeling for cosmetic reasons. it has a feature where this hole goes completely through the part except for this tab in the circle that's supposed to interfere in the path of the hole. How can I achieve this?

Hi,
To make sure that the middle part not to be cut, you can use the offset command.
At first, make the circle visible, then select offset distance.
Thank you.

ahh yes except the piece to be left intact is at an angle and the offset would overlap it to get the material on the other of the tab side cut. The only thing I think I can think to do is cut it then fill it back in on the tab part in another operation.

Cut the hole through the first side up to the tab, then just make a new sketch on the face beginning the cut after the tab. Project your circle and finish the extruded cut through the rest of the part.

Or using the same sketch for the second extrude cut change your start plane to "from object" and pick the face to start the second cut beyond the tab.

Regards,

Yes, and the problem is the piece that needs to be left untouched is at an angle across the void so no matter which direction you come from the path of the cut touches the part I wanted to be left alone. I ended up just making a sketch and filling the hole after the cut operation. Another thing I thought of was just to make a tool body to extract from the model. I'll post the model below so you can see.

Sure here you go. if you remove the last extrude from the timeline you'll see the hole left by the cut operation.

Change extrude8 cut extent "to object" and select the angled face of the tab. Then you don't have to fill the cut after the fact.

Regards,
