Thanks for the idea jhackney1972! I've tried a mixture of embedded construction points for placement and bodies for the removal of material via combine/cut.

I think what I'm looking for is the ability to set maintain a cutting feature within a body, or maybe setting a body to be a 'cutting body'. Haven't really seen this feature in other CAD software, but I think it would be really useful for those of us that re-use parts in this way.

Hi all Fusion wizards out there!

I'm wondering if there is a way to create a body or feature within a component that will automatically be understood as a cut or hole.

We use the same hardware all the time with the same milling and boring information. Currently I have created bodies within those components that represent the material to be removed and manually use the combine/cut to create that hole.

Essentially I'm looking to add a 'cut' feature that would stay as part of a component and would automatically cut any body it intersects.

Image below shows an example of a part we use often and how it intersects other components.

Is this possible?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

Hi,

The extrusion tool can be used for both extruding and cutting a profile.

In production, a cylinder is then recognised as a cylinder and a hole as a hole and machined accordingly.

Please share a design with the relevant notes.

File > export > save as f3d locally > attach it to the next post

günther

No, you cannot create such a body. You can come close to what you desire by using a master body that say has studs on it and then position it on another body where you want the stud holes and use the Combine command, and select to "Keep Tools" if desired.

Too bad, this would be a great feature for those of us that use the same parts over and over.

Thanks for the responses!

You may be able to use drilling templates or something similar. Take a look a this blog and video and see if it may help. It is basically the same thing you are speaking of except it is not the final component. Just had an idea, in the final component you want to make the holes, embed a template sketch, which you can activate as needed to create the holes using the Extrude command.

I created a Screencast to show you the idea of marrying a drill template to a component, or assembly in my case, and using it after placing the component or assembly in place to allow me to create the mounting holes quickly. The beauty of this method is the drilling template is always with the component or assembly and is available whenever it is placed in another assembly. It comes close to your idea but it is still not automatic but it is convenient.
