"Object Not Visible" When Trying to Insert a New Canvas

When I try to insert a new Canvas, I get an error saying the object I'm trying to insert is not visible. Problem is, not only is it not visible, but the Canvases object itself is not even available in the Browser to make visible until I click OK. Once I click OK, the Canvases object appears in the Browser not visible, and I can make it and my inserted canvas visible. Then I have to edit the canvas to properly position it. I highlighted this issue back in October when it first started to occur for me, but have received no responses. This problem still persists. Can someone at Autodesk please look into this issue and advise? Thank you.

I am not seeing this behavior using an image of my own. Could you zip up an image that this happens to you so I can test it myself?

Hey John, thank you for your reply and screencast. I understand what you're saying about an existing Canvases folder needing to be visible prior to creating a new canvas. However, the issue I was referring to was happening when no Canvases folder existed prior to creating a new canvas, i.e. the first canvas in the project. Having said that, when I just now went to create a screencast with a new blank project document file, the issue I'm referring to did not present itself. When I proceeded to create the first and only canvas in the new project document, a new visible Canvases folder was automatically created in the browser listing, as it should be. So the only thing I can suspect is that it's an issue that happens randomly for whatever reason, without the ability to deliberately duplicate it. That being the case, I'll simply deal with it on the random occasions it does happen...no huge deal. Thanks again for your help John...it's much appreciated! - Frank

I have seen your problem once, at first it was confusing, until I realised - I had hidden and deleted canvasses from my file, and then started to replace them, so not a completely new file.

On insert the browser item appeared with the eyeball turned off, canvass in the folder and all was normal.

May not be what you are experiencing.

yes, this is technically a bug. If you do these steps, you can hit the case you are seeing:

insert a canvas
make the Canvases folder invisible
delete the canvas object
insert a new canvas

After step 3, the Canvases folder still exists, and has an attribute of invisible. However, because it is empty, Fusion does not show that browser entry. At step 4, the folder is brought back, with its visibility attribute still set to off.

Ideally, at step 4, when the folder is added, its visibility should be set to on. But, there is an easy workaround, I guess - as you say, after OK, you can make it visible again.

Hi Jeff...I believe you may have identified the conditions under which the issue occurs. Fact is, I often delete individual canvases after I've used them because when I view my projects in the F360 phone app, the canvases sometimes appear when I don't want them to. I'll need to pay attention the next time the issue occurs to see if I'm trying to create a new canvas when an existing empty Canvases folder exists. Thanks for taking time to post your thoughts...they helped me better understand the conditions under which the issue may be occurring.

Hi Jeff...in follow-up to my previous message, I was working on a model this afternoon in which I had previously created multiple canvases that were located in a Canvases folder in the browser. After utilizing the canvases, I had deleted them all, including the Canvases folder itself. This afternoon, I tried creating a new canvas, which normally should have created a new Canvases folder. Instead, I got the "object not visible" warning per the attached screen capture. So it would appear the bug has to do with trying to create a new canvas and Canvases folder after a previously created Canvases folder has been deleted. Hope that clarifies the situation.

Hi,

Your screenshot shows a deactivated Canvas folder.
I cannot see if there is content in it because the folder is not open.
If you try to insert a new Canvas in this state, you will of course get such an error message.

Hello Guenther...thanks for your reply. Where do you see a deactivated Canvases folder in the screenshot I attached to my previous message?? There's a deactivated Construction folder, but there's no Canvases folder appearing in the browser listing on the left.

So Guenther, not only is this a bug with regards to the Canvases folder, but it's also apparently a bug with the Construction folder as well. In the attached screen capture, I was attempting to create an offset plane, the first such Construction object in this project file. As you can see, there is no Construction folder yet appearing in the browser. When I try to create the offset plane, I get a warning in the lower right that indicates the object I'm trying to create is not visible. Well not only is it not visible, but the Construction folder is not even automatically created without me first clicking OK. Then when I do click OK, I have to make the invisible (by default) Construction folder visible in order to see the offset plane I just created. Why should I have to do that? If I'm trying to create an offset plane, shouldn't it be automatically visible in an automatically-created visible Construction folder when I click OK? Why the extra step?

You can see in my Screencast that what you describe as a "Bug" does not happen. What the forum needs is for you to record a Screencast or some other video showing you starting with a new model file and the actual creation of an offset work plane. After completing the Screencast, save the file and attach it to a reply to your forum question along with the video. This will give the forum users both visual record and a file to verify what is happening. If you do not know how to attach your model, open it in Fusion360, select the File menu and then choose Export and save the .F3D file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a reply forum post to attach it.

If this panel gets in your way of viewing the Screencast, click on the area indicated to close it.

Thank you for your reply John. One reason I believe it is a bug is that it does not happen consistently. So while you were able to open a new file and create an offset work plane which automatically created a visible Construction folder, the attached Screencast indicates how this desired behavior is not what always happens. I have no idea what conditions need to be present in order for the undesired behavior shown in my Screencast to occur. But I can tell you it happens often enough that it becomes pretty annoying to have to first turn on the visibility of the newly-created Construction folder in order for the construction object you're trying to create to become visible.

@F360uzr, I downloaded your supplied model and reviewed your Screencast and I can verify your issue "in this model". I still do not and have not seen this issue with any model I have created using my Fusion 360 installation.

@jeff_strater, @Phil.E , when either of you have a chance, please look at the attached model from @F360uzr and try and create a new Construction plane. The issue is not that is is created, the issue is the Construction folder appears in the Browser in a Hidden state. Thank you.

Yes it's absolutely easy and possible to create a file that does this.

How to make this bug happen:

1. Make a construction plane

2. Make construction objects folder invisible

3. Delete construction plane

4. Make another

For as long as you have no construction objects folder, this design will throw an error that you are creating a non-visible object at step 4.

Since the workflows described in this post include making canvases and construction planes, making the folders invisible, and then deleting these objects, it's easy to imagine that the issue would be seen over and over, because the workflow used triggers it over and over.

What would be really helpful is showing how to do this in a brand new empty blank design where these workflows have not yet happened. The video needs to include the "new file" creation event and all events leading up to the error. If this is possible, it would be a new bug report. If not, we're already aware of the issue as @jeff_strater has explained.
