Changing Appearance When Rendering Inventor Assembly Uploads

While assessing whether to purchase Fusion 360 as an added manufacturing application, we note that in Render mode when attempting to assign appearances to parts in an uploaded Inventor assembly, we get the following error message:

"This component has appearances assigned to bodies or faces, they cannot be removed because they're in a referenced component. The appearance you are applying will not have any effect to them. More Info"

Adjusting each part separately as suggested in Jeff Starter's tutorial is a non-starter as the parts will not open separately for some reason (and would be a formidable undertaking).

We used the same models a couple of years ago with no problems so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
