I am a student working on a problem for a test.

I created a second sketch plane to keep things organized- projected the key parts needed from the base geometry. now i cannot extrude the items from the second sketch plane- the pallet. ive tried everything - even copying the pallet sketch into the base geometry sketch- still will not allow me to extrude the pallet. im missing something. the thin extrude feature works but thats not what im trying to do ...

I would like to know what im doing wrong so to avoid that on the test 🙂

https://a360.co/44vkAQV

Hi,

First thing, there is no additional user created plane in this file. There are only two sketches.

Sketch one is way too complicated. Sketches should only do one or two things. After you

have extruded the sketch, use the tools to sculpt your model. For example use one sketch

to create the basic wheel and extrude it. Use another sketch to create ONE of the gear teeth

and extrude it. Create a Circular Pattern using the Gear Tooth as the feature to pattern.

Your first sketch is also not fully constrained. A very bad habit to have. In simple models it

usually is not an issue but in more complex models, a number of unconstrained sketches

can break your model so badly it is easier to start again from scratch.

The reason that you cannot extrude the second sketch is because it is not blue in the centre.

This means that the lines of the sketch do not form a closed shape.

The sketch IS fully constrained .

But you have created it from a whole bunch of line segments that might overlap but are

NOT joined together.

Remember, you can only extrude a shape that is closed. You know it is geometrically

closed if the inside of the shape is blue.

Cheers

Andrew

Thank you for the advice. ill review it for sure.

unfortunately im taking horology engineering drawing class- unknown to me when i selected fuzion, that for testing purposes they want to see all the construction lines on paper. I only have 3 hours to complete a drawing like this. they want a front view showing all the construction lines for the wheel and pallet on a drawing along side a sectional view. the only way i found to do this quickly is to convert all the construction lines in a sketch to normal after extrusion. when its drawn the line thicknesses are consistent to the standard. im expecting to be time crunched and thought if i had multiple sketch planes it would be harder to convert all that geometry for the final drawing.

ill certainly give it shot. thank you again,

Brent

Hi,

1. as @Drewpan said, the profile is not closed

2. the divide and conquer method helps

3. the cause is a short line, which is designed as a construction line and thus prevents the profile from being closed.
