1 - I am very new to the sweep feature and am trying to add it to my bag of tricks in fusion. I drew a profile id like to sweep around an edge of a body to create a new body which produced a result but not quite what Im looking for. It wont maintain the original relation so I need some help as to where Im messing up. https://share.getcloudapp.com/rRukbn1X

2 - I run into issues alot when I try to use body profile to have a perfect reference on a new relative sketch. For instance when I offset or project geometry from a body and then try to extend or trim for example I will get errors referencing constraints and or dimensions being removed and its frustrating. I know could create a close replica from scratch with using the profile as a guide but it wont a perfect reference and I've got to believe there's a more efficient way to go about it. Perhaps its something that I can easily fix that I don't understand. https://share.getcloudapp.com/E0u9jPpd

Here's how I started trying to achieve this sweep instead of a different workflow - https://share.getcloudapp.com/DOu2Bvk5

As always the input is much appreciated ! - JD

Please embed images directly into the text using the forum tools (camera icon).

This avoids unnecessary clicking between text and images.
Links to unknown sources are not suitable.
2.

I'm really confused with a response of "No chance a sweep will work because its not consistent." Could you elaborate on that please? To make a sweep You're creating a 2D shape and telling it to follow a path. What part of that equation makes a sweep not possible in my file?

sweep will sweep the same (ie consistent) profile around a part. the cross section of the profile you need changes as it goes around the part.

also, 3d sweeps are really hard to get right in fusion

the original part looks to have been made with a series of offset faces based on the outer shell and the curve used to cut it in half, not a sweep. that process can be recreated, but what I did in the previously attached file is probably faster

I think I must be miscommunicating because we're not talking about the same thing. I am trying to sweep a 2d sketch around a path on the object using a singular edge that has nothing to do with the profiles you're pointing out in the pictures.

yes. sweeps sweep a 2d profile. always. but if the path isn't planer, it's a 3d sweep. 3d sweeps are funky in fusion. it's also the wrong tool for this case becuase it would produce a shape that won't fit in the groove.

Yes that file you attached earlier got the desired result thank you. However I'm not sure how you got there because I'm not very familiar with the patch/surface commands so I guess ill have to try and figure out that workflow to apply in other situations. I watched some 3d sweeps on you tube and got excited which is why I was trying to apply here. Also I see now that the profile changes along its patch somehow which was an oversight and should probably revisit to re-work that groove. Thanks for all your help its very much appreciated!!

as long as the cross cut is an ogee, I don't see how you would get the groove to not change as it goes around. as is it's a pretty nice design, I wouldn't think you would want to change it.

It looks like it was made with surfacing techniques. putting the groove in any other way will be challenging. (unless you change to a planer cross cut normal to the centerline, which would be boring)
