Hi all, I am after some pointers on how best to achieve the results I need. I am trying to create an STL file for the attached item but cannot seem to get going with either the easiest method to use or the best procedure. Can anyone give me some pointers please?
I am trying to create a 3d model and ultimately an STL file to allow the item to be 3d printed if possible. The problem I have is where to start! I can extrude up from the base to create a solid tube but I don't know how to create or carve the flutes into the sides. I have attached a few photos and dimensions below and would appreciate any input.

Main Body dimensions are 144.26mm Dia, 98.25mm high, 8.15mm thick but gets thinner in the flutes at 4.94mm.

The flutes are 22.15mm wide and 73.54mm long

You build 1/8 of it then create circular pattern

Hi Usman, but how would I go / change from the thicker base to where the flutes start ?

Hi Kevan, here is an STL of the product you described. You can add chamfers and fillets as you need.

How can I edit that model, would it be doable with fusion 360?

Admittedly I'm not a native Fusion360 user but if you drop that in to Fusion360 you can probably have a mess around with it. Someone else may be able to answer your question.

I used Autodesk Inventor and exported it to STL

You can draw the flutes on the same circular sketch you'd use for the whole cylinder, then extrude everything and use the extrude command once again to carve the flutes by switching to "cut" mode (although the program should automatically detect you're trying to remove material)

Kevan Dalby No worries! Its night time for me here so I can't do much now, a video would make everything more clear as any modeling practice is....easier done and shown than said 😛 . I can provide you a better explanation tomorrow if you're interested and if no one comes up with a screencast on the forums in the meantime

Kevan Dalby You create an arc 360/8 = 45 degree, inner and outer. Connect them. Extrude down, now you have 1/8 of the shell. Go Sketch, draw another arc to "carve" that out. Extrude 3/4 down. You chamfer the edge or using filet to smooth it out. The last step is doing circular pattern
