This is my 2nd post and still learning, so bare with me. I have attached the file below, but also included a picture of a model that I am designing. I am trying to get the coil to follow the path of the cylinder. Here is what I am wanting the inside of the end product to look like:

So far I have this as my main design:

I am trying to get the coil to follow the inside path of the flared cylinder to look like the first picture. I am not sure what the technical term would be to search the forums. Please help. Thank you!

I have attached two models, one with the spirals cut where the slots go through the component and one where they are not since I had no idea which way you wanted it. It is an easy process to change, just drag features in the timeline. I used a circular profile for the spiral as I could not keep the profile from twisting along the sweep axis. I took out all you moves as the Align command works so much better and does not clutter the timeline. If you need further explanation on the process I used, just let me know.

Thank you. I have been playing with the model you created. Is there a way to make the those spirals into blades? Like the blades in the first picture?

No, I am afraid not. As I mention in my earlier post I had to use a symmetrical shape in my path because I could not find a way to prevent the profile from rotating as it was sweep along the path. In the screen capture below, I have removed all the bodies except one of the sweeps. I changes the profile sketch to a sort of teardrop wedge. As you can see where the sweep begins, red arrow, it the wedge is pointing out, which is what you want but by the end of the sweep it has rotated almost of 90 degrees. I wish I why it does this since the sweep definition does not call for a twist in the profile. Sorry I could not accommodate your needs.

John,

No apologies necessary. I appreciate your help. I have been trying to play around with the coil feature and modifying a coil to twist almost vertically like in this screenshot:

Came up with a different idea. The attached model flights can be modified for their length, spiral and pattern. The only reason for the yellow in the timeline is that I have the spiral flights going through the slots. If you suppress the slots, the timeline is clean. Getting late but I wanted you to see my progress. Model attached. Edit: had to attach the right model.

That is excellent! I was trying to figure out how you did it so I could modify the sweep path to start just above the slots. I couldn't figure out how to do that. What I did figure out was how to cut the tops of the coil so they look like fins. I also made the coils thinner.

Can you explain how to modify the sweep path? Whatever I tried, didn't work.

Thank you!

Take a look at this one, make comments, and then I will create a Screencast on how to modify the sweep height. I started the fins above the slots and made them 0.5mm thick. I improved the outside look by re-creating your inside surface. If I do not hear back from you soon, I will processed to do the Screencast as is.
