List Where A Sketch Is Used

Just wondering if there is a method to find where any element in a Sketch is used in subsequent Sketches &/or Features?

This would probably also apply to Bodies used later to create more sketches/bodies...

In back tracking and fixing my "novice mistakes", this could be very useful. 🙂

- if you follow the rules for creating components in fusion you will always find your sketch in the component. in the timeline of the component all sketches are listed numerically and you can see very quickly what happened before or after your sketch. So you find almost blind to your sketch. Another rule should be to name all sketches. to group work courses and this group should also have a name.

Hi,

1. have you already used the tool "Find in Window" (Bowser >Sketch > right click > find in window).

2. sketches can be tracked completely only but not single elements (circles, lines..).

Yes, I name all sketches, use components etc. But I have no way to click on a Sketch, and find where it has been used in later sketches/features/bodies etc.

Hi Günther, yes I use both Find In Window and Find In Timeline. Just thought it would be really useful to Right-Click, and pop up a list of where it has been used. Thought there may have been some way to do this.

Problem is partly because as a novice I didn't begin using best practices, which I'm now trying to improve. 🙂

hi @MaxHugen ,

i have seen a lot of videos by brad tillis and lars christensen and no one has a problem looking for a sketch or having to find it - in no way.

a component has sketches in it and usually a sketch is followed by an action that is like a fingerprint and even i have no problem finding the sketch.
click on part find component with body and the sketches.

if you can't find it, then you have a personal organizational problem.

a lot is not even in sketches such as chamfers, threads, holes, radien.

then you click on the work process and find the corresponding featcher. -----------greetings mango

You're right, not quite what I was hoping was somewhere... but I'm probably engaging in wishful thinking.

I can't find the menu items you showed in your image though, and a couple look useful. Where can I find these in the latest version of F360 please?

This is the Addin mST Sketchtools. But it is no longer available.

Hi Mango, you're quite right, as a novice teaching myself, I used sketches way more than I should have, and plenty of other novice mistakes and bad practices. I am also watching the videos by Brad Tillis etc, which I'm learning heaps from, and now going back in my project to rectify at least some of it. 🙂

I find your question completely valid and that functionality does exist in more mature CAD software packages.

It exists there for obvious reasons!

Following Fusion 360's R.U.L.E #1 & #2 can definitely be helpful in locating stuff, but most people that refer to R.U.L.E #1 only read the first part of that rule and completely ignore that there are other perfectly valid solutions.

As designs become more complex better tools are needed to manage complexity. the Fusion 360has added wonderful tools to create complexity but the functionality to manage that complexity has not caught up.

I use other CAD tools and there it is visible what is used and referenced where, including sketches.

However, CAD software isn't anywhere close to where other 3D modeling tools are with their abilities to manage references. I'd use SideFX Houdini as a reference.

The feedback should be very useful.

Hi Peter, I was a program developer before I retired, doing custom management apps for US construction jobs like new hospitals. The users were construction managers, who weren't hugely interested in the "management" of their projects as opposed to the pure physical construction side, so programs had be very intuitive with lots of immediate help if they were going down the wrong track.

For example, an error msg telling these construction guys "this cannot be computed" would have killed the program and our business. While they really liked what the program provided, it was just a tool, not their core interest. So anything they did "wrong" was always accompanied by the best suggestions we could think of, plus a web link to brief specific examples of issue and solution. Worked well, as we recorded any probs as they happened so we could beef up the help where needed. Plus a very quick personal response to any problems or mods/updates asked of us.

With no CAD experience, I chose F360 because it had a solid heritage, AND seemed to have an active forum. Good choice in my opinion, as the Forum has been hugely helpful to me as a raw novice, plus excellent video tutorials.

I'm a happy student, am following Rules 1 & 2, but with much to still learn about best practices. 🙂

I always used to include an f3d file in posts, but struck a prob once the file exceeded the max. 71Mb file size limit on uploads. I'm in the process of splitting some parts that can logically be in separate files out, and then linking them back to a "master file". Then the individual files sizes should be uploadable.

I agree that it does have a solid heritage. If it didn't I would not use it daily. However, just as some of the other commenters who I felt were indicating that the functionality you were asking for was not needed, Fusion 360 has some room to grow 😉

I agree that Fusion still has plenty of room to grow. I'm also convinced that Fusion has the best rapport between the users and developers because of the forum. I've used many CAD platforms over the years, some I'd prefer to never have to again but the Fusion team lets us come on here and voice our concerns openly and create the necessary dialog to drive improvements.

The benefits of that cannot be overstated in my opinion.

I too agree... Fusion is still new in the Market. And Autodesk is still in stage of advertising it and making its space in the market... So it has a room to grow...

Also I think mostly all the Forums have atleast some people who are there like employees to help us out.. And I feel all the forums are equally good...
