Is there a way to define a plane that cuts through an object, Yes

then stretch the object out either side of the plane? Only in some circumstances

Kind of like extruding the object either side of the plane based on the shape defined where the plane cuts through the object…

You can harvest the cross section of the object, into the sketch on that plane, then Extrude > 2 sides / symmetric.

Might help.....

Take a look at the Screencast and see if this process helps you out. The object, being cut here, is very simple but it can be more complex, the process is the same.

thanks - this seemed to do the trick but noting I had to manually "split body" and move the two portions aparts and move them apart before extruding....unless there was a way to do this in one step after doing the cross section analysis? (i.e. move & extrude in one go)

A few ways to do it, but without seeing your "profile / object"

Just make it longer. In John's cylinder - a longer cylinder without the high jumps?

cut - move - extrude,

Move face - Press Pull etc.

I think he will with my method as he needs to use the Intersect Tool to get the profile, and the Slice function makes it easier.

For some reason, which he did not share, he is doing a Split body, and moving them apart before he does the sketch, intersect and extrude. Got me because the Split Body and moving apart was never in the original descriptive need.

My mind has a thing like this, and the stretch inner cylinder is the question.

Hi guys - just checking back in - thanks for the help. Yes I used "stretch" without knowing the best term to use. I've had a chance to try things and both the cut/move/extrude and sketch/analyse approches seem to work, so all good.

I guess overall I was trying to understand whether there is a two step "cut/stretch" approach rather than a "cut/move/extrude" approach for example, but not a big deal I guess.
