I have no idea why but here is what I found to work. If I made the mesh section sketch with the top level component activated, the sketch stayed put. I then activated the appropriate component and created a sketch in that component by tracing, under great zoom since the mesh section sketch wont project to another sketch, and created the joint origin. Creating a joint between each of the components and the first component allowed me to edit the joints to achieve sufficient alignment betweeen the 8 components to create a space that will index on the common part and allow room for all the components in a common cavity. I'm sure there is a better way but for anyone trying something similar and banging thier head on the keyboard too, this worked.

I am working on a project that contains 8 imported meshes from our scanner of assemblies. The meshes need to be aligned by a common part of all the assemblies. The meshes were aligned by another person by creating 3 point planes on mesh surfaces and using the align function to achieve alignment. This was not accurate. I am trying to use joints to align the imports to a native origin in the project. When I try to create a mesh section sketch on an already imported mesh the sketch moves out of position as soon as I click OK in the mesh section sketch window. I tried this on 3 different meshes and the sketch moves to a different location on each, not relative to the native origin, the imported mesh origin, or anything else I can find. I am thinking it is moving to the original import location of the mesh before the align function was used. In any case, it is useless to me in the creation of a joint origin.

Does this project need to be started over or am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for the help.

are there move features in your timeline? If a Move of the mesh happens after the sketch in the timeline, the section position will no longer be aligned with the mesh. Can you share this model here?

There are no move features in the timeline. The timeline of each inserted Mesh only contains the insertion. The guy that gave me the file said he had to turn off the timeline to have the align function work. I do not know what component was active to do the align function. There don't seem to be any icons on the timeline that look like the align icon. I am activating the component and attempting to create the mesh section sketch in the component to use it to joint the component to the native origin. The sketch appears in the activated component timeline. It just instantly jumps to a different location, not on the same plane as selected, not offset from that plane but parallel, just out there, askew in all dimensions. There is nothing after the attempted creation of the mesh section sketch.

Sorry, can't share due to NDA. I know that doesn't make it easy.
