I have a design with two components: a panel and a connector. The connector mounts on one side of the panel. I need to transfer the drill hole locations to the panel. I also want to extrude the rectangular shape drawn on the front face of the connector into the panel to thin the panel where the connector will be placed.

I can get an extrusions through the panel and to a depth in the panel to work to work. (Only the holes have been extruded in the included figures.)

The connector will likely have to moved because of other considerations. When I move the connector, the extruded features remain in their original location.

How can insure that the extrusions move with the connector?

1. create a new empty component for the wall and make sure it's activated. (by default it should be)

2. Ground the component

2. Create a sketch, extrude it to create the 3D geomerty for the wall.

Insert the connector and use an assembly joint to joint it to the wall at the location and depth you want it in your fnal model ...

Just share your model (export as .f3z and attach to quick-reply ) . I'll demonstrate one way to do it in a screencast.

connector.f3d

I don't think that this will work. This was a copy/paste of the file in the Finder. It is probably only the file name. I'm not sure how to get a link.

I said "quick reply" and I know that will work.

Just click into the empty field at the bottom of the thread. It will for obvious reason show your avatar, not mine 😉

Once you do that that will change into an edit window with an attachment section below:

Thanks for pointing out the asymmetry problem with the connector. It was unintended.
If I make a joint between the wall and the connector with the contact point inside the wall, does part of the wall get cut away, or do I need to cut out the space for the connector before making the joint?
I really appreciate your assistance. I'm still not clear on how to proceed, however, I'm am working on it.

You should be able to follow the Timeline in the file that I attached, but I would have done it slightly different creating a New Component for the Connector and a New Component for the Panel before ever creating that geometry.

Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction!!

Here is a summary of the solution:

1) Create a panel object and fix it.

2) Include the connector object.

3) Use the join command to place the connector on or in the panel.

4) Create a sketch in a plane parallel the end of the connector. Project any features needed from the connector such as mounting holes. Add other features such as cutout clearance around the connector.

5) Extrude the sketch features into or through the panel as required.

6) To move the connector, edit the join command in the timeline. The extruded features will move with the connector.
