How to identify a component’s material?

I use a number of materials in my project, and they’re all displayed in the materials window. There are enough of them, however (particularly ones that are similar), that it’s not obvious which one is used in which component. There must be a simple way to tell, and I’m probably looking right at it, but I can’t figure out how. Any tips?

Hi,

if a component contains different materials, it looks like this

günther

The material is identified as "ABS Plastic" in Properties,

and that's what's shown as being in the design in the Physical Design dialog.

If I look at the Appearance dialog, however, there are several materials identified as "ABS (white)" (I can only display one label at a time in a screenshot) since I've played around with the color.

How can I determine which one is currently in the model?

Since user assigned Appearances can override assigned Material Appearances, really the only way to find out which components have custom appearances applied is to right click on the Appearance, you want to know, in the Appearance dialog box and right click and choose "Select Objects Applied To" and look for the underlined highlighting of the component in the Browser. See Screencast below.
