Nearly every single time I attempt to insert a sketch from a DXF or even SVG it never works correctly.

Basically what happens is my lines are behaving as if they are not closed, even though they are solid vectors in Adobe Illustrator where I draw them. There should be no open lines, although when I insert them into Fusion 360 and zoom in, there are all sorts of new lines that should not be there. It's almost as if it offset random lines and is creating new shapes. What the hell is causing this?

If I am doing this wrong, please could someone help me figure it out? I can attach some screenshots as well as the F360 file. Even if the sketch can be "fixed", I really want to know what is causing it and how to avoid it. As of now, custom sketches from external programs are out of the question for me.

Many thanks in advance,

Mike

I started to look into this, but it appears that every line/arc/curve is duplicated, and some are offset by a tiny amount. Were all these curves in the original DXF?

Is it possible that you inserted the DXF twice?

DXF and SVG both can be notoriously sloppy. Fusion requires lines/curves to be pretty precise in how they connect to adjacent entities. It's not surprising that you get failures with them. Sometimes these formats require a lot of work to clean up.

I noticed that too. I have looked into similar questions and I can't find an answer to why it is happening. The lines are most certainly not there before inserting into Fusion 360. I will most likely have to play around with the design or try another way of inserting or saving the designs. As far as why the curves are splines, I am not sure. I did not draw anything natively in Fusion so Fusion must have converted some lines or tried to clean them up. I am not sure, but thank you for the reply. I will put the pieces together and eventually figure this out.

I have done some weird work-arounds that can get me the result I am looking for, although it does take lots of tweaking like you said, an I had a plan to create around 100 unique coins and it would be a nightmare to have to tinker with all of them. One or two is no big deal but 100 is a lot of work haha.

That's totally fine. I will play around with the files and see what I can do. Since I drew the design in Adobe Illustrator, I used circles for the coin shape, but when importing the files into Fusion it converts them to splines for some reason. I did not intertidally draw the circle using splines.

Thank you for looking at the file. I will work on this.

Mike

Don't really know what I'm doing but found I could select the spaces (Fills?) and delete, then it imports without all the duplicate lines. See attached file, still has problems with the splines but no duplicates. Not sure if you can\should create this differently in illustrator to fix the problem with duplicates.

I also verified that the DXF contains duplicate geometry, probably driven by the filled regions in the original design. So, at least, Fusion is not introducing the extra geometry which is at the root of this problem. Not sure if there is any way to correct this in Illustrator in your process. But, in general, I would stay away from filled regions if you want to import into Fusion, because Fusion doesn't understand them, anyway.
