Looks like you'll have to update the PowerPoint Presentation as well. You can see the slide mentions a "new sketch" but doesn't show you how it was built.

I'm using the "Learn Fusion 360 in 90 minutes" tutorial where you follow along and create a tumbler. I'm at the stage where you "Use existing geometry to create a design" - basically you're creating the lid from the profile of the tumbler. For the life of me I can't get an extrude as shown in the video. The instructor selects the inside edge to make this lid (this makes sense as you want the extrude to match the inside diameter of the tumbler) while in the extrude dialog box Fusion won't let me select edges, only faces. (note; I've tried selecting edges while not trying to extrude with success, so I don't believe I am doing anything wrong here.
Please help. Is there a setting or an update that has changed the functionality of the extrude tool that only allows face selections? Below is the image of where I'm stuck. I can extrude a face, not an edge 😞

I

Hi @sangerasong Any chance you can attach your file where you are having the issue? I haven't done the tutorial you talk about so I'm not familiar with the steps. Typically when you start a sketch and click a model face as your sketch plane, the edges are automatically projected into your sketch and you can extrude them. The things I would look at in your file would be to see if you selected the correct plane for extruding the body. It is also possible that you have autoproject entities on active sketch plane shut off, in which case you would need to project those edges manually. That might be something for you to try. Edit your sketch, go to the create menu and then choose project/include and then project. Next click on the edge you want to extrude.

If you are still stuck, if possible, post the file and I'll see if I can figure it out for you.

I'm not projecting from a sketch Kevin. In the video (I'll post it soon) we are asked to create an extrusion from existing geometry. You'll see in the video, before I choose extrude, I can select edges and face without a problem. It's not until I use the extrude feature that I cannot select an edge. I also can see in the selection priority, that I cannot select edges -- again this only happens when I use the extrude feature and I'm not sure why it's greyed out.

Sorry about the trouble my friend. There are a couple of options that can serve you well. You can click "New Component" and name it "Lid". Then you can click the Sketch Icon and select the top face of the gasket. At that point, the sketch grid will appear on top of the gasket. You could click "Finish Sketch" and then choose extrude. You will be able to click either the inner or outer edge of the gasket.

An alternative, is to repeat the same steps, but when in sketch mode, choose "P" for Project or click Create>Project/Include>Project. Next, you would click the inner circle of the gasket and choose finish sketch. You can then extrude the -1" as well.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the workaround. I did eventually get to this solution on my own but my problem still is: I haven't been able to "extrude from geometry" like the tutorial asks us. If I'm doing something wrong, I want to learn how to fix that, if the Autodesk tutorial is wrong, it should be fixed.

I think one of the issues is that you are taking the overall assembly and adding components to it that are technically already there. For example, you already have a lid here, but have turned the visibility off. If you were to check the "eye" icon next to the original lid or gasket, those components would be visible. Ideally, you would use the modular parts that accompany the particular module. Those should be in the course resources download.

As far as I am aware, geometry faces are the only things that are available to be extruded in this way without a sketch. Geometry edges are not.

Give me a bit to complete the tutorial and I'll report back with what I find.

@brian_bobbitt I appreciate your insights. Those lids and gasket are there because I completed the tutorial successfully using that workaround you and I figured out. However, my students won't come to that conclusion if they are following that tutorial. That's my big concern.

I see your point. It looks like I edited out the portion of adding a sketch and projecting the inner circle to make the extrusion. I'll get that added tonight. Thanks for reaching out.
