When I am designing an assembly, I like to use the Copy As function to save the component as a standalone drawing for manufacturing. I noticed the Copy As file is not the same as the original file with additional holes and sketch geometry not found on the same part in the assembly. I have done it several times with the same results, Construction planes, additional extrudes and sketches. The only was to copy the same part is to delete the capture history of the entire assembly and then save the component. When I do this I get the same part in both drawings. Any idea what is causing this to occur?

we would need to see an example. I do know that, if you have cross-component sketches (for example, if you create a sketch on a face of another component) that will cause extra work planes to be in the copy (because that other component is not there), but I have never seen extra extrusions or holes, etc. An example might help to explain it, or create a bug for it.

Just in case this hasn't occurred to you (I have often missed this): You must save the design first, so the additions are captured, then Save As should contain all the info that was added, in the new file.

@jeff_strater wrote:

@jeff_strater This is the wish I had for dealing with sketches where a reference face is lost. Redefine sketch plane almost always end in disaster with the sketch rotated or reversed. I just tested Save Copy As where the sketch is on another component and as you said I a reconstructed plane. Could do with better tools to align the plane in the base feature though. But with a bit of effort I was able to reposition the plane onto a face and have full control of the direction the XY and Z point, far better than redefine sketch plane!

Here I edited the base feature and repositioned the plane.

Thanks Mark

I understand the problem and will be more diligent in my approach. It would be good if Fusion 360 put in some guard rails for this like a simple pop up indicating the sketch might not have the right parent body or component. Don't get me wrong, this is not bowling with the side rails up for a higher score. The fact is Fusion 360 prides itself on the ability to service the CAD CAM world in addition to simulation and animation. That means the butt in the seat is not just a specialist in modelling and can hone that aspect of the part creation. AS an example, I am designing not just the part, but assemblies, then building an animation for my customer to understand the concept, then kicking into manufacturing and doing the setup on six different cnc machines. It is inevitable when I go back and make a design change, my head is not in the "which component or body am I on" in the assembly. I make the change and run with it. A pop up that said hole on a second are you sure would go a long way toward a look at your capture history and seeing less yellow boxes.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I will need to rebuild a capture history as the only way I was able to
salvage the part was to delete the history. I do understand how the
sketches might be in the wrong part and that is as simple as turning them
off. But added extruded holes are a concern.

I will followup.

Vince
