I am trying to sketch a mortise and tenon joint on the top part of a table leg. I am doing this by creating a rectangular sketch within the top face of the leg. However, when I go to extrude, the extrusion happens on the bottom face of the leg. What am I doing wrong here?

The first photo is of the sketch that I made (note that this is the top view). The second photo is after I extrude that sketch by 0.5 inches (note that this is the bottom view).

You probably select an origin plane or the wrong face when you created the sketch and thought it was on the correct side. As long as the sketch is parallel to the extrusion direction you can extrude from any side, regardless of the location of the sketch. The Screencast will explain. If you would like, attach your model and let the Forum users give you some hints. If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section of a forum post to attach it.
