1st verses 3rd Angle Projection

Hi all

This might have been asked before. So appologies if it has.

Years ago I used to do a lot of manual engineering drawing using paper. pencil and drawing board. One of the first things you did in those days was to specify in your title block which angle of projection you were using. 1st, or 3rd angle and put the appropriate cone sysmbol on. Also the scale.

Im trying to get to grips with creating decent looking 2d sketches from my models. Does anyone bother with this notation any more? The standard asme or iso title blocks have neither projection, nor scale. Im starting to create my own title blocks and templates and just keep thinking i should put these in.

Also is there any particular way of setting things out?

Sorry, im finding the 2d aspect actually more complicated than 3d rendering for some reason. I just need to get used to how its working i suppose as its automating things and poking its nose in where i would have previously done things manually.
does anyone have any advice?

If only working in-house then Projection Symbol

can probably be omitted.

If however, you are sending out your 2D drawings to vendors who might be using a different standard - you should include the symbol.

I think the drawing environment within Fusion is probably a bit immature - at least 15 years behind common CAD technology. I get the impression they thought the design world was moving past 2D documentation - despite their protests that no, that isn't the case.

This statement confuses me. 2D Sketching is completely different than 2D drawing documentation.

I get frustrated with the way Fusion messes up my sketch dimensions (as compared to say Inventor or SolidWorks), but it is sketching - not 2D documentation detail drawing.

Thanks for the reply. Good to know that I should include the symbol. I thought i was just being old fashioned.

Appologies for the confusion. I meant the 2D drawings that you create from your models. I didnt mean sketch in reality. I meant the 2d layout.

Im trying to get to grips with making a custom title block, then creating templates to automate the creation of 2d drawings, exploded views, parts lists etc from my models. I'll get there.

I would actually strongly suggest you skip over the title block creation for now and see if the BOM functionality suits your needs!

In Fusion 360 you need to create a 2D drawing in order to create BOM table.

That BOM table can be inserted as a table into a drawing sheet.

That drawing sheet can then be exported as a PDF or printed on paper. There are not export abilities of that formatted table into Excel or database or other spreadsheet format.

You'd have to use the Bommer or OpenBOM plugin to get a BOM ready for purchasing.

@hamid.sh. I am aware of that functionality, but intentionally skipped over it. I would not even call that "functionality" It is only a hair better than the addin that I assume is still available. Many years ago a user wrote an addin that provided better functionality!

My assumption is that the OP is looking to use Fusion 360 in a professional environment where daily or at least regular use and maintenance of BOMs is required. For that sort of use a .csv export is completely unacceptable, at least in the industry I work in.

Looking back on over three decades of professional engineering and CAD experience in a variety of manufacturing industries I can say that Fusion 360 BOM abilities are utterly inadequate and are no match for any of the software packages it proposes to compete with. Not even remotely close!

Thanks for the input. However, i think ive not made my question clear. It was mearly to see about the projection symbol and if people still use it. Seems that they do and I should include it.

And also just any tips re: creating automated drawings and custom title blocks. Im not very familiar with the 2d drawing aspect of Fusion, so i make my model, then seem to be mucking about for ages trying to get some decent looking drawings done. I just wondered if anyone had any top tips.

Interesting to hear about the BOM and the limitations with Fusion.

I will continue to watch videos on the 2d creation. There are some good ones out there.
