You need to work through some of the tutorials to get a handle on how Fusion works.

You are working on a sketch. When you select "create a sketch" the first thing you need to do is to define a sketch plane. That's what your first click will do. If you want the plane to be the top of your box, you need to click that surface first to establish the sketch plane there. Only then can you go to the line tool and start drawing and have a line or other sketch object turn up on that plane. Fusion just made a best guess since you had not defined a sketch plane and used the XY plane.

Work through some of the learning materials, you will save yourself loads of time and a great deal of frustration.

VERY new at fusion 360.

I'm just trying to draw construction lines on a face of a model and it keeps making me draw on the XY plane or X or Y axis instead. I'd select the face, it would highlight blue. But when I hit construct line it would de-highlight and it would make me draw on the XY plane. I dunno what I'm doing wrong. any ideas?

thx

When you start a sketch you first select a plane and in 2D sketches (i.e. the default mode) sketch entities are drawn only over that plane. In your case I am guessing you've started the sketch on XY plane. If you need to draw on another plane you should have started a sketch on that plane, e.g. by selecting a face or first making a Construction Plane. It is also possible to Redefine Sketch Plane (from right click on its name in timeline or browser), but it's best to plan the design beforehand and start each sketch on the appropriate plane.

By the way, you can also check 3D Sketch from the Sketch Palette to be able to exit the initial plane within the same sketch but for most situations (especially for beginners) it's recommended to stick to 2D.

I don't see a problem in your screencast. You select the face for the new sketch and you are able to draw over that plane. Maybe you were trying to edit the previous sketch?

Maybe you have the feeling that you're not drawing in the object because you click outside (especially since you have Snap option checked in the Sketch Palette)? If that's the reason I note that Fusion considers an infinite plane once you select a face for sketching. That's totally normal; the plane is infinite, it depends on the users where on that plane to draw entities. Also if you want to have edges of the face as reference you can either explicitly Project them, or have "Auto project geometry on active sketch plane" option checked in your preferences.
