Cant convert large X_T file to fusion design

Hello,

I have a large (717mb) multi-component x_t file that i need to open in fusion. But after finally getting it uploaded (had to use the web interface) it constantly fails to convert. I even went out and bought a mid-tier gaming desktop (have successfully been using an M1 Macbook Pro for my Fusion work)

I am on a 115mb/s Down 20mb/s Up fiber internet connection.

Is there is anything I can do to make this work?

FYI, I am unable to share a link to the document due its propriety nature.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have no idea why the translation fails, but I suspect that it has something to do with the size of the file. 717 MB is an awfully big design, I suspect the translation is timing out. What is in this file?

OEM cad data for a 4x4 front suspension system. So lots of individual components.

Is there a setting to allow the process to run longer?

so thats it, fusion has its limits in what it can handle? Seems pretty poor?

If you work on proprietary stuff and don't have the tools, knowledge or skills to trouble shoot your own problems, don't come her and complain!

So whats the point of a community support forum, if we cant ask for information on limitation which is not detailed any where in the Fusion docs. This has nothing to do with skills or knowledge? We need to develop parts based on OEM data and fusion is the software we have chosen to use in our business.

Asking questions is fine, that is indeed the purpose of this forum.

The part of your post I quoted in my post has nothing to do with asking a questions, however!

The vast majority of questions cannot be answered without looking at data.

You are not the first or last user who cannot share their data ...

For single CAD file 700MB+ is a very large data set. If all of that is "real" CAD data, meaning BRep of NURRBS surfaces, then that data set includes many thousands of part and/or a lot of complex geometry. However, Automotive companies (Ford, GM etc. Not tier 1-x suppliers) often only share triangulated mesh data. If that was "baked" into the file (I am not sure the X_T format can include mesh data) , then that might one one reason that it does not convert.

Also, .X_T is a native parasolid file format. CAD software that uses the parasolid geometric modeling kernel might have an easier time to read that format. Fusion 360 and Autodesk Inventor are based on ASM which is a fork of the ACIS geometric modeling kernel.

It might be worthwhile to find a way to convert the file into STEP format first and then open that with Fusion 360, through the file->open dialogue. That will use the local converter and not the web converter. The local STEP import in Fusion 360 is pretty quick!

if you can share the design, then we can try to trouble-shoot it. But, without the design, then, there is not much we can do.

To be honest, if your file is really over 700MB, I suspect that Fusion will not perform well with it, if it could be translated. Where did this file come from? What is in it? Can you get a simplified version of it, or one that is broken into pieces?

@jeff_strater Ned shared the X_T file with me privately. The interesting thing is that it can be viewed in the web viewer without a problem,

I downloaded the file and converted it locally using another CAD software. This also took over an hour (on an AMD 5950X). I started the import about an hour before I went to bed and the just left it run through the night, so I don't really know how long it took.

Opening the exported STEP file in Fusion 360 too 5-10 minutes. Viewport performance and navigating the model on my machine is also very fluent. The X_T file includes solid bodies and surface bodies and is not organized into components.

It might be useful to see where the online conversion fails. I wonder if the conversion simply times out.

Thanks, @ned.morris89 - I've created a bug FUS-105935 for the translator team to look into this. I do suspect a timeout, but I'll let you know when I hear more.

I have exactly same problem, except the file is even larger, 900MB.

So I was thinking to reduce the file.

Would I be able to do that online? for I'm not able to open the file locally.

I can open and see the file on line, but can't seem to find a way to delete or edit any parts.

What exactly do you mean by "online"?
Fusion is offered in a Browser version, but I am not sure it can load such large designs.

Everything else online is just a viewer and doesn't allow edits.
