Jeff you might be onto something here. When I select certain joints in the browser, the model lights up in blue wireframe like in the screenshot. This is true for joints that are in the master assembly as well as select joints in subassemblies.

The selection highlight is different than if I select all components in the browser - for that selection, the model hightlights in a milky blue colour and there is no wireframe.

Furthermore, if I delete all joints in the model, several joints still appear in the browser, even though they don't exist anymore in the timeline. They cannot be selected in the browser either.

I think there's something corrupt in the model.

Has anyone seen this before? This is happening often with this particular design when I try to edit broken Joints.

If you can, please attach your model. I would like to see if they show up on my system. If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

this looks like the selection highlight when an entire design (or large subassembly) is selected. All the child components are also highlighted. Was the joint in question perhaps to the global origin of the entire design?

it is possible that something is messed up in this design. I know you cannot share the model publicly, but if you are interested, and can share it privately with the development team, we can take a look at it, and see if we can learn anything from the design, and possibly help you fix it. The data would be very well protected, and used only for internal testing. Of course, I understand if the answer is "no". Thanks.
