Extrude to object can't change direction

If my sketch is between two parts of an object I can't choose which way to extrude. I've tried using the second part of the two direction option and it doesn't change the result. Also I noticed if I select two direction I can't select the same object for the two directions, which seems odd.

Hi,

your edges not flat (if you trying to sketch on the face you will not able to select it )
make sure edges are flat .

Hi, there is no problem with selecting faces for sketches (they happen to all be flat). The problem is with extruding from the sketch to the object - there is no way to specify which direction to extrude in.

Hey Gunther thanks for the reply. I've attached an example. If I edit the Extrude2 feature, keeping Extent Type as To Object and selecting the body (NOT a face), there is no option I can see to tell it which direction to extrude. Also, if I set Direction to Two Sides, and set Side 2 Extent Type to To Object, I can't select the same object. (I can't even create a second extrusion, select the new face that has the same shape as the sketch, and extrude to object, as it still goes in the wrong direction! See Extrude3 feature.)

I see what you are saying.

But if you want to go in two directions - why not go All rather than to Object?

If you want to go in either direction (only one) drag the arrow in direction you want to go and then set to All.

Hi,

extrude to object means extrusion to a bounding surface of an object.
As you can see in the GIF, this can be more than one.

That's fine if my part is solid but if it's not e.g.

then I get a different result if I use Extent: All. Seems like there's something missing or not working on the Extent: To Object option. I know I can work around this for now but want to flag it as a possible bug if others see the same behaviour...

Just saw your previous reply - please note I am selecting the Body, not the Face. Yes - I understand selecting the Face behaves differently.

Hi,

The option is called "to object" and not "to body".

For me, that already requires selecting an area of the body.

@g-andresen is correct. To Body does not support what you are trying to do, that is why To Face exists. As @TheCADWhisperer suggested, do a two-direction Extrude, use To Object for both, and select both faces. You may have to use "to adjacent faces" if the profile would intersect more than one face.

Thanks all - very helpful to understand the limitation when using To Object then selecting the body (I was selecting it from the browser). I can now see how selecting a face and selecting 'Extend: To Adjacent Faces' achieves exactly what I want.
