Projecting to a curved surface (again)

Hi Folks.

I have encountered problems using the 'Project to Surface' function before and received considerable help from the forum, but I seem to encounter difficulties using this task with every new drawing.

I have created the drawing features shown below on an offset plane.

I need to project them to the curved wall of the carriage behind the plane using the Project to Surface function:

As you can see in the dialoogue box, the 'OK' button is greyed out. Why can I not perform this task? What am I missing?

The file is appended. There are actually two doors to model on each side of the carriage, but if I can work out the problem with help, I can carry on with the others. Sometimes, I find this function works without problems, other times, it drives me up the wall.

I created a new sketch, project to surface, choosed the 2 faces, double click on line to select chain until every lines are selected, choosed the vector and clicked ok.

Why don't you use the Emboss tool in the Timeline?

Project to a New Sketch that is a 3d sketch, so making a 3d sketch when required has to be switched on in Preferences.

Why? There are tools to bypass this process, Extrude from Object, Emboss, Deboss, and Thin Extrude. You can’t Extrude those purple regions in the 3d sketch.

Blue lines should keep you awake at night.

Use the Extrude command to create a surface from Profile to Body.

Include 3D Geometory to extract ridgelines.

Thank you gentlemen. Some cryptic replies there and I think I shall have to work my way through them carefully. Still not sure if they will tell me where my error was initially.

I have had a look at the solution proposed by Bunga, but it does not appear to do what I need. It seems that there is a leak in the rectangles because, apart from the top one, I can not select the lower rectangles, instead the entire surface in that area is selected

and the projected sketch disappears.

The upper panel needs to be extruded towards the viewer, whilst the three lower ones are extruded backwards by 0.5mm. The larger upper panel is to be cut away for the glazing.

I had already used the emboss command to cut the door frame, so will see what I can do with that on the rest of the door.

So you didn't need the 3d sketch and associated grief.

Sketch disappears, after the first operation if that is switched on in Preferences. Click on the Eyeball to get it back.

Change Presences for a permanent fix.

Emboss is different to Extrude with how the edge faces are done. Emboss will set the edge faces normal to the door, Extrude will set the edge faces normal to the sketch. Very important decision for some, 3d printed carriage you won't even see the difference.

I see, so you are not simply requesting to project, but you want to do Extrude with that line.

I apologize for not understanding your real purpose.

I think the Emboss function would be better in this case, but I have thought of a different way.

For example, with Extrude, there is a way to extrude it as a new body and then do a boolean operation to extract the intersecting surfaces.

First, create an appropriate rough body in Extrude

Copy Body1 and use the Intersect option in COMBINE to extract only the intersected area between that copy and the Body county you just created.

In addition, cut the overlapping area with KeepTool & Cut in COMBINE.

Now that each area has been divided, you can manipulate the areas with Press Pull.

Now all that is left is to Combine all the Bodies and you are good to go.

It takes a lot of time and effort, but there seems to be a lot of ways to do it.

However, I have the impression that the commands related to intersections are still weak, so I am looking forward to future version upgrades.

Thank you for the further suggestions, Folks. I am not ignoring them, but life has got in the way of 'hobbies' again! I shall work through them when I get the chance and report back in due course.

At the moment, it appears that the imported canvas image was out of scale (perhaps distorted) in one axis. Calibrate canvas seems to adjust both X and Y axes of the canvas by the same proportion. I need to be able to adjust one of the axes without changing the dimension of the other. Actually, I suspect I am breaking the rules by mentioning a different problem on a particular theme. Ignore this for now, whilst I research the knowledge base to try to find the answer.

Hi Folks.

I promised to give you feedback on the thread. I decided that there were so many errors on the design that it would be better to go back in the timeline and in effect start again. When I got to the point of placing a sketch from an offset plane onto the curved surface of thebody, I found that the Emboss feature produced the desired result in the simplest way.

Why does Fusion appear to work well, one moment then refuse to do so 30 minutes later. Following the successful use of the emboss feature I wished to use it on a new project. Having created a body with a curved face, I drew a sketch on an offset plane.

As you can see from the Error message, it refused to work. I tried extruding the sketch from the Object, but could not select more than one face (The curved surface appears to have three faces). It would extrude, but only from the central face and did not wrap around the curve.

Advice again please.

I also tried using the 'Project to surface' feature: Here are the parameters,

but no success.

Similarly the 'Emboss' feature was no more successful.

Where am I going wrong?

Hi,

It is not possible to make the embossing in one step. It is necessary to make one embossing for each surface.
For example, the middle profile must be used for embossing 3 surfaces.

Thank you, Günther. Getting there, having watched the video six times (so far). Of course, my intention was that the embossed beading in sketch five would be raised, it took me a while to realise that you had sunk the face instead. Consequently, my efforts so far have some of the raised beading embossed, but not all of it.

There is also a partial omission on the right hand edge. I will play around with etching the face away and see if that looks OK. Watch this space.....

OK. Sunk the panels on the right hand side (ignore the step left of centre for the moment, I am still working this out but I will get there). That has resulted in a hole on the far right hand edge.

I think I need to increase the thickness of the bow end to accomodate this cut. Probably some careful editing. Watch this space.....

When embossing, of course, the thickness of the object to be embossed cannot be ignored.

I decided to delete the earlier emboss features and modified the sketch by breaking it into three sections, each one corresponding with the relevant face. I was then able to emboss each of the sketch entities on to the appropriate face with the result shown here.

It would be helpful if Fusion had some consistency between similar feature functions. For example simply selecting faces and objects differs between extrusion, project to and emboss commands.

Anyway, rant over, thanks for your help. This thread is another one for copy and pasting into a reference file for future reminders.
