Embossing on a compound curve.

Gentlemen

I have used the embossing tool on this carriage roof to add the rain strips outlined in blue on the image. This has worked successfully on the simple curved centre of the roof, but I can not create an embossed entity on the curved ends.

The outline was created on an offset plane. When I try to emboss, I can select the profile, but not a surface below.

I have tried using Extrude and Project to surface commands, with no result in either. Any suggestions gratefully explored.

Reading the posts, I see that development work was in progress for an enhanced emboss command. Is this yet availalable? I am using Fusion 360 2.0.15050 running on Windows 10.

Hi,

Embossing is (currently) only possible on a single surface, which must not multiple curved.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Is there any work-around to extend these strips onto the curved ends?

Not my trick but a Surrogate Emboss may well work here?

It is a lot easier to project the two outlines onto the three surfaces of your roof and the loft a profile of your rain strips along both projected lines.

And it's still easier to model a quarter of the roof and then use two mirrors to get the whole one.

embossing to doubly curved surfaces is coming... We've been working on it. I have lost track of exactly when it will be released, and I know that does not help you today, but we are excited to get this feature out in the world.

Many thanks for the suggestions and information, guys. I look forward to an enhanced emboss tool in the future. Meanwhile I think I may have had a workaround suggested that will do the trick. Essentially, it means creating a sweep/loft of the missing parts of the rain strip. Bill Bedford's suggestion of mirroring also seems a useful shortcut, so thanks again.

I have tried Bill Bedford's suggestion of extruding, or projecting the outline of the rain strips to the end curved surfaces, but to no avail.

Thank you Sir. That is exactly what I was looking for. I have clicked Accept Solution. I did follow a similar suggestion earlier but for some reason, I could not remove the section of the body below the roof. Many thanks.

Hi Jeff,

New to Fusion and straight away have found this limit with "emboss" on compound curves (Think the end of a trumpet flair). Is the any further word or timeframe for the introduction of a compound curve emboss feature?

You did not give much information on what you want to accomplish, thickness, add or subtract so I just guessed. I did not use Emboss but surfaces. The thickness is an addition of 2 mm but can be edited. If you want to subtract material just revers the Combine. Model attached.

Last year, Mr. Hackney very kindly sent me a video describing how to produce the required result (rain strips on a compound curved surface). After a considerable hiatus, I am now trying to complete my model. I have followed the advice as closely as I can but I am failing every time, with different error messages coming up. The latest message is: 'Coincident tools would create illegal or non-manufacturable bodies. Try with separate tools.' I managed to remove the rain strip extrusion on top of the roof, but get the error message when attempting to split and remove the lower body extrusion.

I attach the latest version of the file.
