You probably used Copy/Paste instead of Copy/Paste New. The first one will give you an "instance" of the original so if you bore a hole in it the copy will get the hole. The second one will give you an independent copy where changes to one will not affect the other. Just a guess.

If this is the case, there is a way to "sort of" separate them without doing your work over again.

I copied a component ( left side of a box) to use as the right side of the box. when I add features to the left side, they propogate to the right side. How do I prevent this from happening?

Can you share you model? If you do not know how to attach your Fusion 360 model follow these easy steps. Open the model in Fusion 360, select the File menu, then Export and save as a F3D or F3Z file to your hard drive. Then use the Attachments section, of a forum post, to attach it.

I used the move/copy tool. and selected Create Copy. This apparently the wrong tool for this operation.

It is not the wrong tool if you want an "instance" of the model but if you want it unique you want to make sure you create a component from your body and Copy/Paste New on the component. You will then use Joints to put the component in place. If you are still only working in Bodies, you probably need to start using Components. Attach your model and I will demonstrate. How to do this is shown previously.

You are using components already, now lets get into using Assembly Joints. The video will explain the use of Joints in your assembly and the Copy/Paste New with a component. The only thing I did not do, after the Paste New I did not rename the component in the Browser.

Model is attached if you want to look at it.
