Quick summary for anyone else who stumbles on this thread:

Before you do your Emboss (or rewind the timeline), go to Surface → Create → Offset.

Select the face(s) at which you'll want to separate (i.e., those on which the new geometry will be embossed).

Offset by 0, creating a new body with a copy of those faces.

Hide the new body if necessary.

Emboss as before.

Solid → Modify → Split Body

Body to Split: The original body (with newly-embossed geometry)

Splitting Tool: The new body

Done.

I'm relatively new to Fusion here, and can't figure out how to do something that I would expect to be easy. I've attached a screenshot of the project, which is a 3D-printed container for some letter tiles for a game.

The raised lines above the letters need to be in a different material (filament) from the main body of the container. They run along a curved surface so I can't just sketch and Extrude. Emboss works well here for the geometry, but then I run into a problem: I can't find a way to easily select the embossed geometry to assign a material to it, short of dragging the material onto one face at a time. I'd expect to be able to do any of the following:

Define a Selection Set and apply the material to it. I can define the Selection Set but as far as I can tell there's no way to use it when applying materials.

Project the sketch onto the relevant faces and then Extrude to a new body.

Tell Emboss to generate a new body.

Select the newly-embossed geometry and easily separate it from the main body. (This is technically possible but then involves a bunch of work closing holes.)

Some version of this issue (identifying/separating pieces of geometry when the separation involves more than a planar surface or single face) keeps coming up for me and I've not found an answer. What am I missing?

Thanks!
