Hey mbell,

Yeah, I think the problem is that the "Move/Copy" command you were using isn't parametric; it's just a more precise way of positioning a part where you want it. You can insert parameter values into the value boxes, but as soon as you click "Capture Position" it simply captures the final position of the part and "forgets" all the stuff you did to get it there. The easy tell here is that when you advance through your timeline, a move command doesn't show up anywhere between the initial position of the part and where it ends up.

I think the behavior of the move command is different when moving bodies within a single component. I'll play around with it once I get to work.

-Scott

H.

I have produced a design driven primarily by parameters but the function has stopped working when I copy a part.

I have followed a number of suggestions concerning how this part was copied from Rt click copy, highlight in the tree and copy/paste, CTRL C -V and converted body to a component and Paste New and none of them worked. I have tried 'Compute all' . I have tried a making a new body, using the above procedures and parameters and still nothing. And for giggles I have tried reinstalling Fusion and a new drawing with a new body but still nothing.

The only thing I can think of is an update to drivers our IT dept did but it's a bit tenuous.

any thoughts

thanks

Hi! Try this option to see if it makes a difference. Go to Preferences -> General -> Default design type -> Hybrid Design. After that, start a new design and repeat your workflow. Does it work better now?

Many thanks!

further to me recent reply, I have just loaded Fusion back up and changed a parameter value and some test bodies/components moved around as expected as well as the the 'proper' required components.

I deleted the test objects and continued with my design. I extruded a sketch via a parameter and the length changes when changing parameters but my copied components have now stopped moving based on parameter values. I have again tried different copy/paste and paste new variations but again nothing.

I have tried compute all again

Saved and restarted Fusion but still no movement when parameter changed

I have included my project below - I am trying to copying a leg (as new) whose distance is controlled by a parameter and some maths

thanks

HI, I have redone my design.

I have copied > paste New a leg (the centre leg in the images below). I have applied as-built joints and changed the length parameter (Ext_Length) and the leg still does not move with the rest of the connected objects. I have even entered a formulae to position the leg based on parameters and it still does not move.

Note the screen grabs below and please note the Parameter 'Ext-Length' from 6000 to 4000mm

My new version is included

Hey mbell,

So if I understand the problem correctly; you have copied one of your leg assemblies and positioned it at the end of your gate; you've secured it in place using an "As-Built" Joint; and your intent was that the leg would move with the length of the gate as you adjusted it with a parameter.

The issue is that you're using an "As-Built" joint. I re attached the leg using actual features of the part and the assembly works fine now.

Maybe a Fusion dev can speak more on this, but I don't think "As Built" joints aren't associative to any features of your parts; they simply fix the position of one component's origin relative to another component's origin. I would say in your case it's generally better practice to use the "Joint" function and define the relationships on the actual features of the part.

-Scott

Hi Thanks for the prompt reply, but the end leg is positioned via a formula AND is locked via a joint but it doesn't move on my machine.

AS mentioned I just don't understand why it doesn't move. When I tried this for the first time the other . It just seems the copy command and parameter functionality has broken

The only thing I did to your file was delete the As-Built joint and re define it as a normal joint, using the features on the parts to align the joint, and now it seems to be working fine.

-Scott

I was trying to add joints to the 'green' leg, but other than an 'As-built joint I could not find highlighted faces which to choose (Fusion said no) . But also, the position of that leg is also driven by parameters before we even get into joints. So what was I was doing wrong I don't understand.

Edit - I notice that one of you joints is contained within the First Leg (3) component.

"I notice that one of you joints is contained within the First Leg (3) component. Is that the key was I trying to put the joint in the wrong place in the tree?"

That was just me being sloppy :p. It shouldn't matter where you put the joint. Personally, I like to try to keep the joints under the main component.

As far as to why and how; I'm not really sure, but what I can tell from your feature tree, your positioning of the third leg isn't parametric; you only have a "capture position," which I believe only captures the current state of the objects in the assembly, not necessarily how they got there (whether they were "Moved", "Aligned", dragged, and so on). You're saying that the position of the leg was placed by a parameter; what do you mean by that? Did you use a "Move" command and type a parameter into one of the position boxes?

Some general tips for joining;

- Select the part you want to move first (in this case the leg), then the part you want to move it to (the gate bar). When Fusion animates the joint, it will always show the first part you picked moving to the second part, EVEN IF the first part you picked is anchored (when you complete the joint, both parts will snap back to their "proper" place).

- If you highlight a face and hold the "Ctrl" key, Fusion will keep the face selected and allow you to pick any of the points it generates on the face. For any face it will usually show a centroid feature; this is how I was able to join the bottom foot to the bottom of the leg post, even though there was no actual face there.

-Scott

Good Morning Scott,

Thank you for the reply.

I didn't use the 'Move' command on its own I did try using it with the 'Copy' option enabled. I tried right Click copy/paste, Right click copy/paste from the timeline, from the browser tree and then from the browser tree and Paste New. Each time I used parameter values for the offset but the leg never moved when I changed the Parameter value which I couldn't understand. I could get extrusions (top and bottom rail) to change but not the position of the leg using the dame formula. At this stage I started the search for information and finally tried the 'JOINTing' route via various suggestions here and the web.

When trying each of those suggestions, even in a new design with random bodies then Components, I couldn't get the objects to move via changed parameters. This is where the joint situation came in and I went down another rabbit hole. I tried an As-Built joint but this didn't work and the frustrations started to build. It was at this point you flew in with your cape bellowing, your underpants on the outside and saved the day LOL.

@scottprater wrote:

This was the workflow (ish) I tried originally. I specified the leg position via parameter then extruded the rails to meet a legs face. When the parameter value changed the leg extrusions moved but the leg stayed in place.

-Scott
