Computer requirements for Fusion 360

Hi all.

Im looking for advice on computer requirements that will run Fusion 360. I am trying to create models in 3D form but nothing to complicated, so i can machine them in a desktop CNC machine called the Carvera Air by Makera. Currently im using a HP Zbook 14u - i7 CPU - 16 gig of ram but there is nothing special as in graphics card and for most of the modeling stage it's fine, but when I need to splice or the rendering stage of the model the Laptop freezes and then needs to be shut down. Looking for advice for the best computer requirement for what i am trying to do on Fusion 360. I have added some screenshots of some Laptops I think may be OK. I don't what to buy something that isn't going to do the job or spend money that is unnecessary. Please help.

Neither one of your JPG attachements will open. Use the "insert photos" icon, on the the posting dialog to attach your photos.

Can you share more details about your existing computer?

What graphics card does it use?

In my experience interacting with thousands of users here on the forum over the last ten years, the vast majority of Fusion users who encounter performance problems don't need a different computer 😉

Can you share a model you are experiencing performance problems with, along with the exact steps to reproduce the issue?

Thanks for getting back to me. The current laptop is a HP Zbook 14u. i7 - 16g ram, 1 tb ssd running Windows 11 HD graphics 620.

Hi,

1. CPU speed > especially the single core speed

2. Rendering is a CPU task and not for the GPU.

3. I currently have an RTX 3060, which is far from being used to its full potential.

Process.

After running an image through a 3d modeling program saved as a PNG format is then go into Fusion opening the ad-in Image to surface. Generate image. That takes me to main page of Fusion 360 where I create the image onto a round disc. I get to the stage of splicing, push generate and thats where the Laptop freezes and needs to close. The laptop is was thinking of purchasing was the Lenovo Legion 5i. I have purchased x2 types

I am convinced that your assessment that your computer is the limitation is incorrect!

The Image2surface add-in creates a quad-mesh, which is then converted to a T-Spline, which is then converted to stitched NURBS surface patches.

You likely created a T-Spline with a mesh resolution that is way too high, which is why your computer is stalling.

Again, please share the model in .f3d format and/or describe the process in detail with screenshots of settings.

Three years ago, I bought a German notebook with i7 for € 1,100 and expected wonders from the NVIDIA GeForce MX450.
The only thing that was 10 times faster than my 2013 Sumsung Chromebook with i7 was the rendering.

Now I've bought a refurbished HP Mini PC with i3-9300T for €200 as a backup.
Fusion runs just as smoothly on it, and rendering is just as fast, down to the second. I rarely render photorealistic images anymore.
If you don't necessarily want to use a notebook, I can highly recommend a mini PC like this for Fusion.

That recommendation might be correct for many Fusion users. Still, I often find that the more experienced a user is and the more they understand what is going on under the hood of their computer and software, sometimes the less computing power they need, because they can apply better workflows and techniques.

Often the most powerful hardware and software is underutilized because the user uses the wrong techniques and/or are not aware of limitations.

3 years ago, I built myself a computer with an AMD Ryzen5950x and 64Gb of RAM and an NVIDIA 3070Ti FE graphics card. I splurged on a 48" OLED TV I use as a monitor.

That machine has multiple purposes, all of which revolve around 3D Computer Graphics Software such as Blender, SideFX Houdini, Indigo Renderer. LuxCore Render and Fusion.

Most CAD modeling tasks in Fusion use only a single core on that machine. CAD modeling is not why I wanted the 16 cores!

However, there are a couple of modeling-related things in Fusion that are multithreaded. There the 16 cores make a difference.

1. Local STEP model import. I heavily use imported geometry in my professional work. Manufacturing automation systems use thousands of components. When you open such a STEP model in File->Open Fusion and monitor core utilization with the resource monitor or Task Manager, you can see that Fusion uses many cores during the conversion. As it pertains to STEP import and export, Fusions outperforms SolidWorks by magnitudes.

2. T-Spline conversion. When you convert a quad-mesh into a T-Spline and then a T-Spline into surfaces, certain aspects of that are also multithreaded and use all cores.

While not modeling related, rendering in the Render workspace in Fusion is done entirely on the CPU, NOT on the GPU. That also uses all 16 cores!

However, if you are modeling with a lot of geometry, say 10000+ components, the GPU can also make a difference in viewport navigation.

Oddly enough, where the 16 cores of my CPU make most of a difference is when I render specific models in Indigo Renderer. Many models can utilize simple path tracing. Simple Path Tracing is where GPU rendering comes into effect and Indigo and Blender do this beautifully.

Unfortunately, the models I render and the way I develop my LED lights and the optics for them involve tiny, high intensity light sources (LED's) and dielectric materials (Acrylic Glass/Plastic). The key works her is Caustics. That unfortunately does not allow me to utilize the GPU. A Pathtracing render that after hours on a 3070Ti is still almost black is good enough after a few minutes of Bidirectional Pathtracing with MLT (Montecarlo Light Transport). That, unfortunately is not possible on a GPU (yet).
It is also rendering and lighting simulations where I use most of the 64GB of memory on my machine.

I guess the conclusion of the above is that I find it difficult to recommend any hardware without know what exactly the user wants to do with the hardware.
