Adding fasteners without a secondary geometry

Hi,

I want to report a bug/oversight that's really annoying. If you want to place a fastener on, in or through a round object - you can't. Because the curved surface doesn't count as secondary geometry and you can't place a fastener.

To reproduce this:

Create a cylinder and put a through-hole perpendicular through the curved side. Now just try to place a fastener in or through that hole and... you can't. You can move the screw wonderfully inside the hole, the size and thread are selected automatically, its perfect. You just can't place it.

The easiest solution would be to make the "Secondary Geometry" optional and not mandatory: after selecting a position and the size and thread of the fastener just clicking again could place it immediately.

In my current usecase I want to add a setscrew through a wheel and it's incredibly annoying to add a separate new sketch, rectangular plane, then add the set screw to the hole in the wheel and then select that rectangular plane as "secondary geometry", then insert the setscrew, manually move it back down into the threads and delete the plane. Only after this you can somewhat circumenvent this by duplicating a fastener and bypassing the normal "Insert Fastener"-dialogue.

The secondary geometry, as you call it, is optional in the present Insert Fastener workflow. Once you create your fastener, which you should already know the type, dia. size and length, in the dialog box simply select the OK icon at the bottom of the dialog box and the fastener will be created on the model origin and give you the opportunity to move/rotate it to another position if desired. You can then use a standard Joint to place it in the assembly.

Hi John,

thanks for your reply. Well the issue is - as you can see from my screenshot I can't click either "OK" or "Create and continue" despite everything being properly selected (apart from the secondary geometry).

I'm aware of that solution, however - that seems to defeat the basic idea of the "Position"-option in the dialogue. Manually selecting each parameter sure works, however it's much faster to just use the automatic selection there. Additionally it's tedious to manually add and locate/joint screws when working on a bigger project with a lot of screws...
