I changed the file from .stl to a solid body. never thought of just pulling the section from the .stl. What I found with the intersect is that the lines were below plane a couple millions of an inch

Hi! I have a solid body I imported from another source, and Fusion converted it just fine. When I project the outline of that body (either as "include 3D geometry" or just a normal projection down to a flat plane, some of the segments are connected, and some are disconnected, like this:

I can break the link and probably do it that way, but that breaks the parametric-centric design. Anyone know why, in the original object there is an oval, but in the projection, some of the intersections are not carried over?

(unfortunately, I can't share the model as it is under NDA, but I have seen this happen on other models before as well)

Thanks!

I've had the same issue with models created in Fusion 360. My current fix for all Fusion 360 bugs is to change the display precision to maximum in preferences (Actually, restarting Fusion 360 is usually the first).

Are there other faces on the imported model that come close to the projected lines? If so, try projecting those as well.

Hi @nkloski

Thanks for posting! It looks like you are experiencing an issue in which projected geometry from an imported solid is incorrectly generated in Fusion 360.

What file format was this part imported to Fusion 360 in? What workflow did you use to import the part?

I am happy to log an issue for this behavior with our development team! However, I need access to a file in which I can consistently reproduce the behavior you are experiencing. Is there any way you could share the design with me as a public link in a private message? Or could you share any of the other designs in which you have observed this issue?

Please let me know if you have any questions - I'm happy to help!

Happy to provide! I chopped and sliced up the NDA file into something that is non-NDA. This is the bottom part of the file I was talking about, and the Fusion file has two projections in it, both not working.

One is "include 3D geometry" which shows disconnections, and the other is a straight projection to a plane.

This was a STEP file which I hit the "upload" button in Fusion, and it converted the file to a Fusion design.

Thanks!

Thanks for sending the example file over - I was able to reproduce this behavior and have logged a report with our development team (FUS-31813). We will be looking into this issue - we appreciate you bringing it to our attention!

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a workaround for this behavior that does not involve breaking the link on the projected sketch profile - it is necessary to edit the sketch in order to correct the discontinuities. I would recommend breaking the link and using the extend command to work around this for now - I apologize that you will not be able to maintain the parametric properties of the projected sketch with this workaround.

Please let me know if you have any questions - I am happy to help!

Ack...now it is happening on another imported model. Breaking the link and extending the sketch does not result in fully connected profile. It "looks" connected with black dots, but the entire line is not connected, disallowing me to perform loft commands between the "included 3d geometry" profiles. Any word on this? thanks

This is because of issues in the sketch engine.

To be honest it has many more deal breaker issues.

To my understanding they are aware of the issues however focus development on other serious 2D problems in the engine

to produce a better foundation when dealing with those 3D sketch problems. Makes sense - still sucks because some tools

are there in Fusion yet work not always correctly.

It's a known issue and i's been a known issue for quite a while.

That is actually how I found and reported this. But I am not the first one to report this buggy behavior. I just reported that there's a difference in behavior between DM and TL mode.

I had downloaded another user's design and it was created in direct modeling mode, without a timeline. I started modeling to help with the issue and the projection worked fine. Then I noticed that the timeline was turned off.

So I started from scratch with the timeline enabled and the projection did not work.
I checked that back in DM mode and repeated a few more times just to be sure this was reproducible. Then I reported the bug.

So the projected purple line issue is annoying. Can get some stuff to work but other times, nope.

My quick solution is to export the sketch as a DXF. (Place a reference cross in sketch for your export.)

Open file in Adobe Illustrator. Confirm scale and then use the Compound path/Make (Ctrl=8) command. Under the Object menu up top. Then export as a dxf again. Then go back to Fusion 360 and insert new dxf. At that point select dxf and move it to the plane and point of the original dxf. Using the Move/Copy-Move Type point to point tool. This is why you needed the reference cross added in you sketch. You'll have a working sketch you can extrude from at that point. Its a lot of little hoops to go through but it work. And geometry is correct as far as I can tell.

Good luck.

It will be part of my new workflow now.

I agree that this needs to be fixed. For the purpose of being able to grab a quick cross-sectional surface area from a model. It sure would be nice to have a solution instead of a workaround...

Unfixable?
